Why Did T-Mobile Stock Jump?

T-Mobile US (TMUS) shares gained 6.2% on Friday, October 30, 2026, while the S&P 500 lost 1.8%. The company released no announcements, earnings reports, or filings that day. A news report linked the gain to fresh estimates of what it could cost SpaceX to build a rival U.S. mobile carrier. Why would SpaceX’s plans matter to T-Mobile?

SpaceX Wants To Become A Carrier Like T-Mobile
SpaceX is weighing an entry into the U.S. mobile market where T-Mobile operates. That potential entry has hung over wireless stocks, one article said on October 30. Another article that day said higher cost estimates for the project were lifting the carriers SpaceX hopes to challenge, with T-Mobile among them.
T-Mobile has already ruled out one way in. On its October 28 earnings call, management said it sees no room for SpaceX to run a mobile service on T-Mobile’s network.
SpaceX would compete for the customers T-Mobile counted in that day’s report. During the third quarter of 2026, the company added 274,000 postpaid accounts. Management calls these monthly-bill customers the all-important part of its business, and its postpaid service revenue grew 9% from a year earlier. The shares slipped 0.5% in the session after that report.
All Of T-Mobile’s Peers Rose, But By Less
T-Mobile moved with its peers and against the market. AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, Charter and Telephone and Data Systems, the companies on its Trefis peer list, all rose in the same session, with Comcast up 4.3% and AT&T up 2.3%. The SPDR fund that tracks its sector, communication services, fell 1.3%.
T-Mobile’s rise was the largest in its peer group.
T-Mobile Stock Is Still Close To A One-Year Low
No session in the prior 365 days brought T-Mobile a rise this large. The latest big move went the other way: a 7.7% fall on October 23, which left the shares at $146.54, their lowest close of the past year. That fall came after a report that SpaceX was seeking at least 80,000 U.S. cell sites to build a rival carrier.
Friday’s close of $156.44 sits much nearer that low than the year’s high close of $221.98, set on February 24, 2026. Over the past twelve months, the stock lost 25.7% including dividends, while the S&P 500 returned 11.3%. From May 1 alone it lost 19.3%, a stretch in which the index gained 5.4%.
After the rise, T-Mobile trades at 1.8 times its sales over the past twelve months, against 3.2 times for the S&P 500.
T-Mobile is expected to report its fiscal fourth-quarter 2026 results in February 2027. Postpaid account net additions, the measure management says it focuses on, are the figure to watch.
Does This Mean You Should Act On TMUS?
Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.
There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
