How Do The Loan Books Of The 5 Largest U.S. Banks Differ In Terms Of Loan Types?
With the largest total loan portfolio among all U.S. banks, Wells Fargo manages more mortgages, commercial real estate (CRE) loans and retail loans than any other bank in the U.S. While Bank of America leads in terms of outstanding commercial and industrial loans, Citigroup has the largest card balances.

Notably, in terms of the composition of loans for each of these banks, commercial and industrial loans have the largest share of the loan portfolio for each of the five largest U.S. banks – making up just under 40% of total loans for these banks taken together. This has not generally been the case for Wells Fargo since its acquisition of Wachovia in 2009, though, as the bank’s portfolio of residential mortgages formed a majority of outstanding loans. It was only in the first quarter of 2016 that Wells Fargo’s commercial loan portfolio edged ahead of mortgages.
