Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) has signed a $10 million deal with University of Queensland to do combined research in sustainability engineering. The $10 million contribution will be spread over 6 years and will go toward the establishment of the Dow Center for Sustainable Engineering Innovation. [1] Dow Chemicals competes with companies like PPG Industries (NYSE:PPG), 3M (NYSE: MMM) and Dupont(NYSE: DD). We currently have a Trefis price estimate of $39 for Dow Chemical’s Stock, which is 9% above the current market price.

The newly constituted program is expected to create a R&D program which will design solutions for big sustainability challenges in the coming decades. The center will focus on solutions which work at the intersections of urban energy, water and carbon to provide better and more sustainable lifestyles to the human civilization.

This is an effort by Dow to tap the expertise of University of Queensland in science and engineering for its own research purposes. On the other hand, this will help University of Queensland to generate the resources necessary for cutting edge research. Dow Chemical’s focus on advanced engineering and new markets will be well served by the university’s interdisciplinary expertise and the ability to set up focused targets.
