What Moved Chip And Storage Stocks On October 27?

News reports on October 27 linked a rise in Micron Technology stock to Elon Musk’s forecast that a new sector will drive memory-chip demand. Seagate Technology rose 3.7% ahead of its fiscal first-quarter results, which it released after the close that day. The Nasdaq Composite index rose 1.2% that session.

The October 27 rise marked Western Digital’s second straight gain. The stock climbed 3.6% on Monday, October 26, when news reports linked gains across chip and storage stocks to a Bank of America note. That note argued that memory customers are now locking in supply for years at a time.

Most of Western Digital’s sales come from cloud customers. Driven by demand for its high-capacity nearline HDDs, cloud revenue was $3.9 billion in fiscal Q1 2027, or 88% of the total, management said on the October 22 call. Management also said storage demand is spreading to enterprise customers and to newer buyers such as AI frontier labs, and that long-term agreements with customers cover part of what the company ships.

Western Digital Outpaced Most Of Its Peers

Dell Technologies gained 7.5%, a little more than Western Digital, while Seagate Technology rose 3.7%. Micron Technology, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and NetApp also rose by less than Western Digital. The stock advanced alongside its peer group, but it outperformed most of those companies. The entire group fared better than the technology sector, whose SPDR fund, XLK, rose 1.7%.

Where Does Western Digital Stock Stand Now?

A rise this large is not rare for Western Digital. The stock rose at least this much in 25 sessions over the prior 365 days, and moved this much in either direction in 44. Its latest move of that size in either direction was a 10.2% fall on October 2, 2026.

Over the 12 months to October 27, the stock returned 194.8%, against 15.0% for the S&P 500. During that year, the shares posted a closing low of $124.92 on October 28, 2025, and a closing high of $746.23 on June 18, 2026. The shares have fallen since the summer, losing 17.5% over the three months to October 27 while the S&P 500 gained 5.8%. On October 27, they closed at about half that June high.

Western Digital trades at 9.6 times its sales over the last twelve months, against 3.2 times for the S&P 500. Cloud revenue, which generates most of its sales, is the measure to watch when Western Digital reports its fiscal second-quarter 2027 results, expected in January 2027.
