Welltower (WELL) stock fell 5.8% on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 0.6%. The drop came the day after the owner of rental housing for aging seniors reported third-quarter results on October 26. The session also saw a 4.7% decline for Ventas, which runs its own senior housing portfolio. So what did Welltower report for the third quarter?

What Did Welltower Report For The Third Quarter?

Welltower missed one estimate and beat two others. Net income came to $0.54 per diluted share, falling short of the $0.641 estimate on the earnings calendar. Revenue reached $3.72 billion, exceeding the $3.64 billion estimate.

Management builds its outlook on a different figure, normalized funds from operations per share. That metric rose 24.6% from a year earlier to $1.67, beating the $1.64 consensus estimate. The company also raised the midpoint of its full-year outlook for this figure by 10 cents, bringing it to $6.50 per share.

The business grew fastest in Welltower’s senior housing operating portfolio, which makes up 70% of its same-store net operating income, the profit from properties held in both years. Profit within that portfolio increased 21% from a year earlier, compared to 15.8% for the entire company. Management said this was the 16th quarter in a row with growth above 20%, and the company said higher occupancy and higher rent per occupied room both added to revenue in that portfolio.

Did Welltower’s Peers Fall As Well?

Yes. All five companies on its Trefis peer list lost ground that session, ranging from a 1.5% fall for National Health Investors to the 4.7% drop at Ventas. The real estate sector fund, XLRE, slipped 0.8%. Welltower moved with its peers and its sector that day, but fell further than any of them.

Welltower Stock Is Still Up Over The Past Year

Welltower had not fallen this much in a single session at any point in the prior 365 days. Over the twelve months to October 27, though, the stock still returned 29.3%, compared to 15.0% for the S&P 500.

The shares have come down from their July high. Closing prices for Welltower over the past year ranged from a low of $176.96 on October 29, 2025, to a high of $252.07 on July 24, 2026. Over the three months to October 27, the stock lost 5.6% while the S&P 500 gained 5.8%.

When Welltower reports its fourth-quarter results, expected in February 2027, the figure to watch is same-store net operating income growth in its senior housing operating portfolio.

How To Act On WELL?

Not necessarily on Welltower alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Welltower is one. Over the five years to October 2026, its stock rose 211%, ahead of all 14 other companies in Health Care REITs, where the typical company rose 55%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000.
