A list of market lows features some of the market’s largest names, raising questions about value versus damage.

As of Thursday, September 10, 76 US and Canada-listed stocks with a market value above $500 million are trading at their 52-week lows. The list is led by names from the Consumer Discretionary and Industrials sectors, but the most notable feature is the sheer size of some companies present.

When a company as large as McDonald’s (MCD), with a market value of about $179.4 billion, appears on this screen, it raises a central question for investors. Are these established businesses facing real trouble, or are they simply on sale? The full list of names follows.

Are these businesses broken or just marked down?

Several large companies on this list show a disconnect between their recent stock performance and their longer-term business results. McDonald’s has seen its stock decline 7.0% over the last month, yet its revenue grew 6.3% over the last twelve months. Similarly, Lowe’s Companies (LOW) stock is down 11.1% in a month, while its revenue grew 8.2% over the last twelve months.

The slide in some cases is more severe. Stryker (SYK) has declined 22.4% over the last month. The medical technology firm’s revenue, however, grew 8.5% over the last twelve months. These are not small companies; 21 of the 76 names are also S&P 500 members.

So how should an investor use this list?

A 52-week-low list is not an automatic shopping list. It is a screen for potential dislocation, a starting point for research. A low price can signal a fundamentally damaged business whose prospects have worsened, and it can also signal a solid business that has been marked down by market sentiment.

The disciplined move is to investigate the business before reacting to the price. The names here are at their weakest point in a year, and the work is to determine which are simply cheaper and which are truly weaker.

If any of these names tempt you, resist buying on price alone. Our Buy the Dip screen asks the follow-up question that matters: which marked-down stocks still have the growth and cash generation to recover.

Catching Falling Prices Is A Skill. Not Needing To Is A Strategy

Buying stocks at 52-week lows works brilliantly on the survivors and painfully on the rest, and nobody rings a bell to tell you which is which. The honest answer for most investors is to stop needing that call.

The Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio holds roughly 30 businesses selected for the traits that make recoveries likely in the first place: consistent cash generation, strong margins, resilient balance sheets. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. Watch the low list for information; let a disciplined basket do the buying.
