What Is Behind Liquidia’s Lead Over Its Industry?

Over the past five years, one drugmaker outperformed all 60 of its measurable pharmaceutical peers. That company is Liquidia Corporation (LQDA) (LQDA), the manufacturer of YUTREPIA, an inhalation powder form of the drug treprostinil. Investors holding a stock that far ahead look for the source of the gain. Was it the pharmaceuticals industry, or Liquidia itself?

How Far Liquidia Is Ahead Of Its Industry
Liquidia shares gained 1112.7% over the five years ending October 28, 2026, while the typical pharmaceutical company fell 32.5%. This performance places Liquidia far ahead of the rest of its industry.
The table below compares Liquidia against each layer of the broader market, with the industry and sector rows representing the typical company in those groups:
| 1-year | 3-year | 5-year | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquidia (LQDA) | 97.5% | 637.4% | 1112.7% |
| Pharmaceuticals industry (median company) | -16.2% | 9.8% | -32.5% |
| Health Care sector (median company) | -13.1% | -3.5% | -61.5% |
| All stocks in our data (median company) | -0.5% | 34.0% | -2.5% |
| S&P 500 index | 12.4% | 85.8% | 68.5% |
Total return to 2026-10-28, including dividends; the S&P 500 row is the index level, price only. Industry, sector and all-stock rows are the median company of each group.
In short, the typical drugmaker lost money for its shareholders over these five years, while Liquidia shares moved in the opposite direction.
Was It Liquidia’s Industry?
No. The S&P 500 index advanced 68.5% over the five years, but the typical stock of any size declined 2.5%.
Health care was the weakest of the 11 sectors, with its typical company dropping 61.5%. Pharmaceuticals held up better than the broader sector around them. The typical drugmaker still lost money, so Liquidia climbed against the tide of its industry.
What Did Liquidia’s Business Do?
The business expanded much faster than its peers. Liquidia averaged 749.1% in annual revenue growth over the past three years, compared to 7.4% for the typical pharmaceutical firm. The latest twelve months provided nearly all of that average, with revenue rising 2233.6%.
Revenue surged 6162.9% between 2021 and 2026, and Liquidia converted a steep operating loss into an operating margin of 37.4%. These periods represent the twelve months ending June 30 for both years, and the sales multiples discussed below rely on June 30 pricing. Liquidia also swung from a loss to a profit on a per-share basis, even as its diluted share count nearly doubled with a 99.4% increase.
Investors did not assign a richer multiple to those sales. Liquidia saw its price-to-sales multiple fall 22.2% between 2021 and 2026, and the company had no meaningful price-to-earnings multiple while losing money in 2021. The stock does trade at a premium to its peers today at 29.3 times earnings, compared to 17.3 for the typical profitable drugmaker. Yet the company’s own sales multiple fell over the five years, so Liquidia derived its part of the gain from the underlying business.
A single drug accounts for almost all of this business. YUTREPIA, launched in June 2025, generated nearly all of Liquidia’s revenue in fiscal Q2 2026. Management said on the August 12, 2026 call that YUTREPIA is approaching 30% of the entire inhaled market on a net revenue basis. Liquidia then settled all pending litigation with United Therapeutics on October 13, 2026, and the company said YUTREPIA will remain available to patients with PAH. News reports on October 14 said the settlement costs Liquidia $380.7 million in payments and narrows YUTREPIA’s label.
Is Liquidia Still Ahead Over The Past Year?
Yes, by a slightly smaller margin. Liquidia shares outperformed 64 of its 70 pharmaceutical peers over the year ending October 28, 2026, against every measured peer over the five-year timeframe.
The past three months proved far worse. The stock lost 47.3% from July 30 to October 28, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 4.4%.
Management said on the August 12, 2026 call that it expects revenue to keep growing in line with the quarterly growth observed so far. YUTREPIA’s net product sales, which rose 31% from the prior quarter in fiscal Q2 2026, remain the figure to watch when Liquidia issues its next report, expected in November 2026.
How To Act On LQDA?
Not necessarily on Liquidia alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Liquidia is one. Over the five years to October 2026, its stock rose 1112.7%, ahead of all 60 other companies in Pharmaceuticals, where the typical company fell 32.5%.
Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000.
