Customers are offering JB Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) more freight than it has capacity to handle, but costs for drivers and insurance keep climbing. If the company cannot raise prices to cover those expenses, the extra freight will bring in sales but little additional profit. These prices reset on a fixed calendar, above all in the intermodal business of moving freight by rail, with the first new rates taking effect in the fourth quarter of 2026.

How JB Hunt Resets Its Intermodal Prices

JB Hunt negotiates intermodal rates with customers during a bid season, and the cycle for 2027 began this October. Management has said it reprices about 10% of volume in the fourth quarter. Another 30% receives new pricing in each of the first three quarters of the year. This calendar means new prices cover 40% of JB Hunt’s volume by the end of the first quarter of 2027, and 70% by the end of the second.

Costs do not wait for that calendar. Management has said slightly more than half of about $50 million in extra third-quarter expense went toward driver onboarding, training, sign-on bonuses and wages. Pricing drew four of the nine analyst questions from four different analysts on JB Hunt’s October 15, 2026 call.

An open question matters most when JB Hunt Transport Services is a large share of what you own. See how to protect a concentrated position.

How Big Is JB Hunt’s Intermodal Business?

Intermodal brought in $5.98 billion of JB Hunt’s $12.0 billion revenue in fiscal 2025, with sales for the segment barely changing from fiscal 2024. Sales across the company are now growing much faster than profit. In the third quarter of 2026, revenue rose 20% from a year earlier, while operating income rose 2%.

Margins are also thin by JB Hunt’s own standards. Over the twelve months to June 2026, the company posted an operating margin of 7.5%. That compares to an 11.1% peak over the past ten years, reached during the twelve months to the third quarter of fiscal 2016.

What JB Hunt Has Said About Its 2027 Prices

Management has said its focus in the 2027 bid season is repairing margins, and it is asking customers for larger rate increases than its results have shown so far. The company will not give a figure for them. During the last bid season, the network as a whole received low single-digit price increases.

Management has said it is confident the new rates will cover rising costs and lift margins beyond that. Yet management has also said it remains to be seen whether the company can get back inside its margin targets. It also cannot say what change in revenue per load would fix its margin.

Intermodal revenue per load excluding fuel rose 2% in the third quarter. This metric is the figure to watch when JB Hunt reports on or around January 13, 2027, the first report to include the rates reset in the fourth quarter of 2026.
