Shares of Applied Digital (APLD) rose 8.5% on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 0.6%. Market reports attributed the rally to two developments: an Applied Digital facility will draw some of its electricity from a nearby wind farm, and an analyst reinstated coverage of the stock with a buy recommendation.

Most Of Applied Digital’s Sales Come From AI Hosting

Applied Digital’s high-performance compute (HPC) hosting business, which leases data center campuses to AI customers, generated $262.6 million of the company’s $341.9 million revenue in fiscal Q1 2027. Base rent accounted for $65.8 million of that total, while $183.5 million came from tenant fit-out services, the work required to prepare spaces for individual customers.

Rent grows only as Applied Digital brings contracted capacity online, a process management plans to accelerate. The company expects to place over 600 megawatts into service over the next 12 months, compared with 250 megawatts over the past 12 months. Management said on its October 7, 2026 call that a natural gas supply deal with Base Electron, with deliveries expected to begin in 2030, strengthens its ability to expand its North Dakota campus on its own timeline rather than waiting on the grid. Wednesday’s news centers on how a single facility will be powered, not on results the company has already reported.

Can Applied Digital Pay For What It Is Building?

The company has funded its expansion so far largely with borrowed money, and management says upcoming campuses still require financing. Applied Digital recorded a free cash flow outflow of $4.46 billion over the twelve months ended August 31, 2026, compared with a $998 million outflow a year earlier. It finished August with $6.48 billion of debt, alongside $2.95 billion of cash and short-term investments.

Management said more than 80% of that debt principal does not mature until fiscal 2031 or later. That delays repayment, but it does not pay for the construction itself. None of that changed on Wednesday.

What Wednesday’s Rise Did Not Change

Applied Digital continues to lose money as it expands. The company posted a net loss of $236 million in fiscal Q1 2027, compared with $16.9 million a year earlier, even as revenue more than quadrupled. Management said the quarter included a $67.5 million non-cash loss from the change in fair value of its Babcock & Wilcox warrants and stock investment.

The construction required to turn contracts into rent is speeding up under management’s plan, while the company continues to spend far more cash than it brings in. Applied Digital’s free cash flow, an outflow of $2.01 billion in fiscal Q1 2027, is the number to watch when it reports in January 2027.

How To Act On APLD?

Not necessarily on Applied Digital alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. Applied Digital is one. Over the five years to October 2026, its stock rose 429%, ahead of 24 of the 28 other companies in IT Consulting & Other Services, where the typical company fell 24%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000.
