How Long Can GRAIL Keep Burning Cash?

GRAIL, Inc. (GRAL) sells the Galleri test, a blood test meant to detect cancer early. After funding its operations and paying for buildings and equipment, GRAIL burned $81.2 million of cash in the quarter that ended in June 2026. The company spent more than it brought in during all of the last four quarters. If GRAIL kept spending at this pace and raised nothing new, how long would you guess its cash would last?

How Fast Is GRAIL Burning Cash?
The cash GRAIL burned in the June 2026 quarter equaled 181.6% of its sales, down from 217.6% in the same quarter a year earlier. The table below details each quarter since early 2025.
| Fiscal quarter | Sales | Cash from the business | Cash left after spending on buildings and equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 FY2025 (ended 2025-03-31) | $31.8 million | -$95.0 million | -$95.1 million |
| Q2 FY2025 (ended 2025-06-30) | $35.5 million | -$77.0 million | -$77.3 million |
| Q3 FY2025 (ended 2025-09-30) | $36.2 million | -$63.2 million | -$63.6 million |
| Q4 FY2025 (ended 2025-12-31) | $43.6 million | -$63.8 million | -$63.9 million |
| Q1 FY2026 (ended 2026-03-31) | $40.8 million | -$87.0 million | -$87.5 million |
| Q2 FY2026 (ended 2026-06-30) | $44.7 million | -$80.7 million | -$81.2 million |
Each row is one fiscal quarter. A negative figure is cash going out. The last column is free cash flow.
Over the four quarters to June 2026, the cash burn was about 20% smaller than in the four quarters before, even as the June quarter on its own was slightly larger in dollars than a year earlier. Measured against its sales, GRAIL’s burn is shrinking. Even so, the company still burns more cash each quarter than it takes in from sales.
How Long Would GRAIL’s Cash Last?
GRAIL held $862 million in cash and short-term investments at the end of June 2026. If the company kept burning cash at the average pace of the last four quarters and raised nothing, that balance would cover about 12 quarters, close to three years. The June quarter’s slightly faster pace gives much the same answer, at about 10.6 quarters. GRAIL’s debt, at $91.3 million, is far smaller than the cash it holds.
Who Has Paid For The Burn So Far?
GRAIL’s existing shareholders have paid for part of this burn. The company’s diluted share count rose 38.9% between June 2024 and June 2026, and selling new shares leaves each existing share with a smaller piece of the company. In June, GRAIL completed a $110 million equity financing with Samsung, money already included inside the June cash balance. Borrowing played a smaller part, with total debt rising from $76.1 million two years earlier.
What Has To Change At GRAIL
On the August 5, 2026 call, management said GRAIL’s cash gives it flexibility as it works to secure regulatory approval and reimbursement for Galleri in the United States. On that call, management said it expected potential FDA approval in the first part of 2027, a target rather than a result. On September 23, 2026, a panel advising the FDA backed Galleri’s safety but was divided on the evidence for its effectiveness.
Sales grew 25.7% in the June quarter from a year earlier. When GRAIL reports again, expected in November 2026, the figure to watch is the cash it burns in the quarter, which was $81.2 million in the June quarter. GRAIL has said it will report those results after the market closes on November 4, 2026.
