Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) is seeking to spread the word of its Chromebook further by opening its first retail outlet called “Chrome Zone” in London. [1] It seems Google is still experimenting with marketing the Chromebook – an open-source OS based laptop – and gauging whether or not it is a viable alternative for users as compared to traditional-OS based PC’s. The Chromebook would compete in the PC operating system market with companies such as Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL).

Retail Store Should Provide a More Hands on Experience for Consumers

While for the last 4 months Chromebooks were mostly available online on Amazon or PCWorld, the retail store can be a win-win proposition for Google and prospective Chromebook users. The outlet would essentially provide resources for users to test and experiment with the Chromebook.

Additionally, since the device is a big departure from traditional OS based PC’s given the dependence on continuous Internet connectivity as well as cloud storage, Google can instantly gauge the user feedback the product is getting. [2] While the threat to Microsoft from Chromebook might still be a long-term notion, its certainly a step in the right direction for Google.
