Eaton (ETN) shares trade at 37.5 times earnings, against 22.6 for the S&P 500, a high price for what you may think of as an old-line industrial company. Buyers paying it appear to be betting on one business: the equipment Eaton sells to data centers. Yet the company’s operating margin is thinner than a year ago, and that is the contradiction. So how fast is Eaton’s data center business growing?

Eaton’s Americas Growth Comes Mostly From Data Centers
Management said on the July 31, 2026 call that sales to data centers in Eaton’s Americas electrical business rose about 65% in fiscal Q2 2026. Data centers were the main reason the segment’s organic sales, which leave out acquisitions, grew 18%, alongside strong growth from machine makers and commercial and institutional customers.
The same demand shows up in the rest of the electrical business. Eaton’s global electrical segment also grew 18% organically in the quarter, with the growth coming from data center, utility and machine maker customers. Unfilled orders have grown as well: management said the backlog for the whole electrical business was 43% higher than a year earlier.
Can Eaton Rebuild Its Operating Margin?
Management expects to, at least in the Americas electrical business. On the July 31 call, it said most of that business’s margin decline from a year earlier came from prices lagging costs. Management called that gap temporary, saying that price increases in the second quarter and early third quarter should make it roughly neutral in the second half of 2026. In its global electrical business, Eaton also pulled a general price increase planned for the fourth quarter into the third.
Demand is still running ahead of shipments. Customers of the Americas electrical business placed about $1.30 of new orders for every $1 of sales Eaton shipped.
Still, the data center growth has not yet lifted the company’s margin. Eaton’s operating margin was 16.3% in fiscal Q2 2026, down from 17.9% in fiscal Q2 2025. That came in a quarter when revenue rose 21.4%, so faster sales have not yet meant a wider margin.
What Could Slow Eaton’s Data Center Growth?
Eaton’s own factories could. Management called scaling capacity to turn demand into revenue the clear priority, and Eaton is investing more than $1 billion in capacity expansion. The company is bringing two dozen projects online in the Americas electrical business. Management said lead times are extended on some product lines, and Eaton aims to bring those lead times down.
Shareholders also face a risk beyond growth: the stock has fallen harder than the market. In the market shock of July and August 2024, Eaton stock fell 16.0%, against 7.8% for an S&P 500 fund. It lost 15.4% from October 1 to October 30, 2026, against a 1.1% fall for the S&P 500.
Eaton is expected to report next in November 2026. Three numbers will show whether the bet on data centers holds: how fast data center sales grow, how far new Americas electrical orders run ahead of shipments, and whether the operating margin starts to widen again.
