January proved to be a relatively strong month for the major Chinese wireless carriers, as they added a total of 5.3 million net subscribers, roughly 60% ahead of December 2016. However, high speed additions saw a 20% month-over-month decline, likely due to some saturation in the smartphone market, with major players adding or migrating a total of 28 million subscribers. China Mobile  (NYSE:CHL) the largest carrier, continued to lead the market with 2.3 million net subscriber adds. China Telecom (NYSE:CHA) saw the strongest growth, both on a month-over-month basis and also in relation to the size of its subscriber base, adding 1.77 million subscribers, potentially driven by promotions as well as an improving high speed network.
