Constellation Energy (CEG) stock fell 30.9% in the year to October 29, 2026, posting the worst return among six power companies in its peer group. Yet buyers pay 27.5 times its earnings over the latest four quarters, the most in the group. Only two of those quarters include Calpine, which Constellation bought on January 7, 2026. On those two quarters alone, doubled, the multiple is about 22.6, level with Southern’s 22.7. Constellation also retained the smallest share of its sales as operating profit. So what do you get for paying more?

What You Get For Constellation Energy’s Higher Price

You get growth. Over its latest four quarters, which ended June 30, 2026, Constellation saw revenue rise 26.0% from the previous four, logging the fastest pace in the group. Part of that expansion came through Calpine, a company Constellation acquired. Only the last two of those four quarters include Calpine. Revenue grew 63.8% and 23.0% in those two quarters, against 0.3% and 12.9% in the two before. By comparison, Duke Energy, the peer closest to it in market value, grew revenue 6.3% over the same four quarters.

The price-to-earnings ratio measures how many dollars buyers pay for each dollar of profit earned over the past year, so investors accept a higher multiple when they expect faster profit growth. Constellation trades at 27.5 times earnings and Duke at 18.7 times, so you pay about half as much again for Constellation. On its two quarters since Calpine joined, doubled, Constellation’s multiple is about 22.6, roughly a fifth above Duke’s.

A premium multiple is a bet that faster growth is still to come. Look at Tesla, still valued at about 12 times sales even after its deliveries fell two years in a row. Read Trefis Big Story: How Tesla Blundered.

You give up margin, however. Constellation converted 14.3% of its revenue into operating profit over those four quarters, ranking lowest among the six, compared with 26.6% for Duke. All five peers grew revenue more slowly, and all five are cheaper on four-quarter earnings, though Southern is not once Constellation is measured on its post-Calpine quarters. Within this group, the higher price comes with faster growth and the weaker margin.

How Constellation Energy Sells Nuclear Power

Constellation has been signing long-term contracts for power from its nuclear plants. On the August 6, 2026 call, management said the company had signed about 920 megawatts in long-term nuclear deals with investment-grade customers since the previous call. Those contracts run 18.5 years on average.

Following those deals, management said Constellation had contracted roughly 30% of the steady, carbon-free output from its plants under long-term agreements. Since then, on September 30, 2026, Constellation and Amazon announced a 20-year agreement at Calvert Cliffs, Maryland’s only nuclear plant. The agreement adds about 190 megawatts of nuclear capacity and will support continued investment in expanding the plant. A week later, on October 6, 2026, Google signed a 20-year agreement to buy power from Constellation, adding 890 megawatts of new nuclear capacity through upgrades at 11 of its reactors.

Management declined to disclose pricing on the August 6 call, but said that the deals signed by then treat power from its existing nuclear plants as a premium product. Those long-dated contracts with large customers may also be part of what stock buyers are paying extra for, alongside the faster growth.

What Constellation Energy Has Promised For 2026

On August 6, 2026, management raised its 2026 forecast for adjusted operating earnings, its own measure, to between $11.50 and $12.50 a share, up from $11 to $12. That remains a forecast, and the reported figures for the latest quarter look weaker. Revenue rose 23.0% from a year earlier in fiscal Q2 2026, which ended June 30, yet Constellation posted an operating loss of $47 million.

Management’s adjusted earnings for that quarter were $2.55 a share, against reported earnings of $1.42. Reported earnings remained positive despite the operating loss because of items below operating profit. Management said the rise in adjusted earnings from a year earlier came mainly from the Calpine acquisition, higher capacity prices, and its commercial business.

The stock price appears to assume that Constellation keeps growing faster than its peers and turns that growth into a wider operating margin. The growth has shown up so far. A margin close to its peers’ has not. For now, buyers pay the group’s highest four-quarter P/E for its fastest growth and weakest margin, though on its post-Calpine quarters the multiple is level with Southern’s. Constellation’s operating margin, the measure where it trails all five peers, is the number to watch when the company reports again, expected in November 2026.
