How Much In U.S. Card Purchase Volumes Did The Country’s Largest Card Issuers Report In Q3 2016?
The 6 largest U.S. card issuers reported total purchase volumes of $470 billion for retail cards issued by them – nearly 60% of the total credit card purchase volumes for the U.S. in the quarter.
The credit card purchase volume for individual issuers is taken from their respective quarterly earnings releases. Figures for American Express and Discover represent purchase volumes only for cards issued by them, with purchases made on AmEx or Discover branded cards issued by other banks included in the total figure for the issuing bank. The total U.S. card purchase volume is as estimated by us in our previous article.
JPMorgan, with the largest credit card base in the U.S., has a strong grip on the industry with a market share of almost 18%. Citigroup reported a sharp quarter-on-quarter increase in card volumes for Q3 thanks to the addition of Costco’s card portfolio to its own. You can see how changes to Citigroup’s total card purchase volumes (which include the bank’s sizable international card business) affects our price estimate for the bank by making changes to the chart below.
