Verizon (NYSE:VZ), the largest U.S. wireless carrier, posted a relatively strong set of Q1 2016 numbers that were largely in line with market estimates. While Verizon’s bread and butter wireless operations saw some revenue pressure, on account of lower postpaid service billings and the shift towards equipment installment plans, margins expanded, driven by lower handset subsidies, better cost management and a focus on higher-value smartphone users. The carrier’s postpaid subscriber adds (640k for the quarter) continued to be driven by tablets, as phone net adds remained negative.  Things were slightly more challenging on the wireline front, as traditional landline services continued to witness declines, while the uptake for FiOS services also slowed down significantly. Below, we present some of the key metrics and takeaways from the company’s earnings release.
