NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) stock trades at 19.8 times earnings, against 22.6 for the S&P 500. Shareholders paying that price need to know what they are buying, and the company’s priorities have changed. For much of 2025, management emphasized inventory. It focused on auto customers working through chips they had already bought and tracked how many weeks of stock its distributors held. The latest call sounded different. So what does management talk up now?

NXP Now Talks Up Physical AI And Data Centers

On its October 27, 2026 call, management said software-defined vehicles are one of the first uses of physical AI. It described physical AI in July 2026 as intelligent machines that sense, connect and act in real time. Management also called the data center another leg of NXP’s growth. Software-defined vehicles themselves are not new. Management described its CoreRide vision for them on the February 2025 call. The physical AI label and the data center are the newer themes.

More than a year earlier, management talked about inventory. On the February 2025 call, it said distribution inventory was flat at 8 weeks, sitting below its long-term target of 11 weeks while auto customers worked through chips already on hand. By the July 2025 call, distribution inventory reached 9 weeks, matching management’s guidance of 9 weeks. Those were lean months for NXP. Management reported revenue of $2.93 billion for the quarter ended June 2025, down 6% from a year earlier.

By its July 2026 call, management said inventory digestion was behind the company. The phrase came up once on the October call, when management said electrification had gone through inventory digestion last year.

NXP’s Sales Have Swung From Falling To Growing

NXP’s revenue was $3.79 billion in fiscal Q3 2026, up 19.3% from a year earlier. In the same quarter of 2025, revenue had fallen 2.4%. The company also keeps more of each sale as profit. Its operating margin was 32.5%, against 28.2% a year earlier.

Management has put a number on physical AI. On the July 2026 call, it estimated that AI-enabled processors would make up about 15% of industrial and IoT processor revenue in 2026, more than doubling from the year before. It also said physical AI was already showing up in revenue. The 15% estimate covers a slice of one product group, not NXP as a whole.

Is NXP’s Shift Reassuring For Shareholders?

For a holder, the shift reads as reassuring. The topic management stopped emphasizing had been a problem, and management said in July 2026 that it was over. Management also said then that NXP was finally shipping to real end demand. Over the past year, NXP stock returned 17.7%, against 15.0% for the S&P 500.

The risk is that NXP stock has fallen harder than the market when conditions turned. During the 2025 tariff shock, when management described a very uncertain environment, the stock fell 37% at its worst, against 19% for the S&P 500.

When NXP reports its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026, revenue growth against the same quarter a year earlier is the figure to watch.
