Shares of Micron Technology (MU) fell 17.5% on Thursday, November 5, 2026, during a session when the S&P 500 lost 4.4%. Separately that day, the company filed a current report (form 8-K) with the SEC and said one of its directors would retire from the board. The selling reached well beyond Micron, however: two of its peers, Western Digital and AMD, fell almost as far. What links Micron to a sell-off that wide?

How Micron Is Exposed To The AI Sell-Off

Micron sells memory chips, and its shares were already falling before the session. By November 3, the company had led a sell-off in memory stocks as scrutiny grew over how long AI infrastructure spending and memory price increases can last. On November 5, the selling spread across AI-related stocks. Before the open, Bloomberg reported that Micron had suspended plans for a $4.5 billion memory-chip plant in Taiwan, and memory stocks fell as investors weighed a slower AI buildout after the US midterm elections.

Micron’s revenue and margins have climbed steeply. Revenue for its fiscal fourth quarter of 2026, ended September 3, was $54.2 billion, up 379.3% from a year earlier. The gross margin reached 86.8%, compared with 44.7% in the same quarter a year before.

Management expects memory price increases to slow. During its September 30 call, management said margins for the rest of fiscal 2027 should rise above the level of that year’s first quarter on price increases that continue at a more moderate pace.

Micron Fell Alongside Its Peers

Micron fell slightly more than any of the five companies on its Trefis peer list, all of which declined. Western Digital dropped 17.4% and AMD 17.3%, while Intel, NVIDIA and Qualcomm fell by smaller amounts. The SPDR technology sector fund, XLK, lost 8.0%, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 5.5%. Micron moved with its group, recording a drop more than twice that of the technology fund.

Micron Stock Sits Far Below June’s High

Micron recorded no one-day fall this large in the prior 365 days. Its latest move of this size was an 18.4% rise on July 30, 2026. The drop came at the end of a 39.7% fall over the month to November 5. Shares closed at $656.39, compared with a 52-week closing high of $1,213.56 on June 25, 2026.

The stock still returned 201.4% over the past twelve months, against 9.9% for the S&P 500. Its 52-week closing low was $201.37 on November 20, 2025. At the November 5 close, Micron traded at 5.6 times its trailing twelve-month sales, against 3.2 times for the S&P 500.

Micron is expected to report its first quarter of fiscal 2027 in December 2026. Its margins, which management tied to price increases, are the measure to watch.
