How Big Is ArcelorMittal In The Global Steel Industry?
ArcelorMittal is the world’s largest steel producer. However, the global steel industry is quite fragmented with ArcelorMittal accounting for only around 6% of global steel output, as shown below. A number of Asian steel producers, mostly from China, but also a notable few from Japan and South Korea, are comparable to ArcelorMittal in terms of production. Thus, no single producer on its own can significantly influence global steel production.
However, Chinese steel producers, which taken together account for roughly half the world’s steel production, are the most significant entity influencing global steel supply. Backed by state support, elevated levels of Chinese steel production relative to demand are the chief cause of global steel oversupply and subdued prices.
