Is McKesson Stock Increasing Your Market Risk?

If you own McKesson (MCK) stock or plan to buy it near $1,072, its highest close of the past year, the rest of your money probably already tracks the S&P 500 through funds or other large stocks. Any stock you add either deepens that money’s falls on the market’s bad days or moves on its own. So when the market drops, does McKesson drop with it?

McKesson Stock Has Not Followed The Market’s Daily Moves
On the average day, the answer is no. During the year to November 5, 2026, the S&P 500 fell 0.632% on its average down day, while a $10,000 holding in McKesson rose $19.20 in value. On the index’s average up day, a gain of 0.644%, the value of that same holding increased just $4.52.
Over the past year, McKesson’s beta, a measure of how far a stock shifts for each 1% move in the index, was -0.17, indicating a slight tendency to move in the opposite direction. This pattern held on average, though not every month. In March 2026, when the S&P 500 fell 5.1% during its worst month of that year, the value of a $10,000 holding in McKesson dropped $1,236.
The stock also swings widely on its own. Its volatility, which measures how much its daily moves vary over a year, was 31.6% over the past year, compared to 13.6% for the S&P 500. So McKesson has not deepened losses on the market’s average bad day, but it adds risk of its own.
Will McKesson Stock Keep Moving On Its Own?
McKesson’s business points in that direction. Its North American Pharmaceutical segment, which distributes drugs, generated 83.4% of revenue in fiscal 2026. On the November 4, 2026 call, management said stable market fundamentals support this business, and McKesson has renewed its distribution contract with CVS Health through June 2032.
McKesson is adding businesses around this core. The company closed its purchase of clinical research business Precision Medicine Group during the week of that call. It has also agreed to pay about $1.4 billion for a 49% stake in home infusion provider Option Care Health, a transaction still awaiting approvals.
McKesson’s distance from the broader market is not new. Over the five years to November 5, 2026, the link between its daily moves and the index’s was weak, showing a correlation of 0.14 on a scale where 1 means moving in step. With a steady core, one deal just closed, and another awaiting approvals, the past year’s swings, wide but apart from the market’s, may well continue.
Has McKesson Stock Paid You For Its Swings?
Yes, by a wide margin over the long run. In the five years since October 28, 2021, McKesson returned 39.7% a year, dividends included, compared to 11.4% for the S&P 500. The stock’s volatility over those same five years was 25.2%, against 17.1% for the index.
Dividing the yearly return by the volatility shows the return each point of swing has earned: 1.58 for McKesson, compared to 0.667 for the S&P 500. McKesson’s swings have compensated investors better than the market’s.
If McKesson keeps moving as it did over the past year, the stock will add little on the market’s next up day and, on average, hold its value on the next down day, though a bad month can still hurt. If you already own other drug distributors, McKesson adds to that same bet rather than spreading your money. The revenue growth of McKesson’s oncology and multispecialty business, which now includes Precision Medicine Group, is the measure to watch at its next report, expected in February 2027.
Spreading your money is the point. Here’s how to invest for either a crash or a rally.
