LPL Financial (LPLA) stock fell 15.2% on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, as the S&P 500 gained 0.3%. The selloff followed the company’s October 27 release of its third-quarter results and an update on Commonwealth Financial Network, whose advisers LPL plans to bring onto its platform in mid-November. What did LPL report, and what changed in its plans for Commonwealth?

LPL Reported Results And Expects Lower Commonwealth Retention

LPL posted adjusted third-quarter earnings of $5.97 per share, topping the $5.66 analysts had estimated. While revenue of $5.34 billion came in just under the $5.35 billion estimate, management called the adjusted earnings figure a record.

The company also updated its outlook for Commonwealth. Management now expects to keep about 83% of Commonwealth’s assets when the advisers move over. A quarter earlier, management said the figure stood at around 85% for advisers who had signed, down from the 90% LPL planned on when it first assessed the deal. Management said the lower figure came from a small number of advisers who signed but did not stay.

Based on that retention and current market levels, LPL estimates Commonwealth will bring in about $415 million a year in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization once it is fully integrated. Management expects to reach that rate by the fourth quarter of 2027.

Recruiting also slowed from the prior year. Advisers who joined LPL in the quarter brought $24 billion in assets, down 26% from a year ago.

Financial Stocks Rose As LPL Fell

The selloff was specific to LPL. Financial stocks advanced as a group during the session, with XLF, the fund that tracks the sector, up 0.4%. LPL’s peers moved far less, with Raymond James Financial falling 0.4% and Morgan Stanley rising 1.7%.

Shares Of LPL Closed Near A One-Year Low

LPL had not suffered a single-session drop of this size at any point in the prior 365 days. The stock finished at $269.19, resting just above its lowest close of the past year, $265.86 on May 28, 2026. The highest close in that period was $393.25 on February 9, 2026.

Over the past year, LPL stock lost 21.3%, while the S&P 500 returned 14.0%. Most of that decline materialized recently, with the shares losing 20.6% in the three months to October 28 against a 4.4% gain for the index.

LPL’s next report will cover the fourth quarter of 2026, the period in which it plans to complete the Commonwealth conversion. The share of Commonwealth’s assets that LPL keeps after the conversion is the measure to watch in that report.

Does This Mean You Should Act On LPLA?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
