How Did JetBlue Perform Operationally In December?
JetBlue Corporation (NYSE:JBLU) continued to perform well in its key metrics in the last month of the final quarter of 2016. The carrier grew its capacity moderately at 3.1% y-o-y, when compared to previous months of 2016. Including December, the full year 2016 capacity was up as much as 8.9% for JetBlue, second only to Alaska Air, which grew its capacity over 10% y-o-y in FY 2016. Further, the capacity was being used efficiently as indicated by the 110 bps gain in the load factor in the month.
However, the company’s unit revenues declined -1.5% y-o-y in December, despite the capacity discipline practiced by JetBlue in the last few months of 2016. Its passenger traffic and passengers boarded increased by 4.5% and 6.9% respectively, in the month, bringing the year to date figures to 9.4% and 9.0%, respectively.
