Is Ciena Stock Really Expensive?

Ciena (CIEN) stock trades at 56.4 times its adjusted earnings over the last twelve months. These earnings add after-tax stock-based compensation to normalized net income. That is a steep price for one year of profit, but the multiple looks different when set against the earnings expected for fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027. Ciena has already reported three quarters of fiscal 2026 and is currently shipping an $8.5 billion order backlog. So are you overpaying, or does the profit still to come cover that price?

What Ciena Stock Costs On The Profit Expected Ahead
The profit ahead covers only part of Ciena’s share price. Based on the analyst consensus for fiscal 2026, the stock costs 49.1 times earnings. That compares with 56.4 times on the trailing figure. The fiscal 2026 forecast calls for revenue of $6.43 billion, falling inside management’s own guide of $6.37 billion to $6.47 billion.
The shares remain expensive based on fiscal 2026 profit. Under the consensus forecast for fiscal 2027, the stock costs 29.2 times earnings. That future year is far less certain, however. The gap between the highest and lowest per-share estimates equals 35.1% of the average estimate.
Ciena Has To Earn A Wider Net Margin
Ciena is already growing sales at the pace the forecast needs, leaving the margin as the piece still to arrive. Consensus estimates show revenue rising 31.4% in fiscal 2027 from the fiscal 2026 forecast. This aligns closely with the 32.6% growth Ciena delivered over the last twelve months. On the September 3, 2026 call, management set an early target of at least $8.3 billion to $8.4 billion in fiscal 2027 revenue, describing that range as the floor. Much of that demand comes from cloud companies. Management said about half of Ciena’s business is now with hyperscalers directly.
Profit remains the harder part. The consensus forecast places Ciena’s net margin at 20.8% in fiscal 2027. That compares with 7.8% for fiscal 2025 in the same analyst data, which may use an adjusted measure. On a reported basis, Ciena’s fiscal 2025 net margin was 2.6%.
Forecasters expect a 16.2% net margin for fiscal 2026. Ciena’s reported net margin reached 15.9% in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, helped by a one-time tariff refund, though the forecasts may use an adjusted measure. This leaves the step up to 20.8% in fiscal 2027 as the element still to be proven. With that margin, the forecast has net income rising 68.2% in fiscal 2027, growing far faster than sales.
Management also expects wider margins, targeting an adjusted operating margin of 25% to 27% for fiscal 2027. A target, however, is not a result.
Where Could Ciena Fall Short Of The Forecast?
The margin is the likelier place for a shortfall, and pressure on it runs in both directions. Management said a tariff refund added about 70 basis points to Ciena’s fiscal Q3 2026 adjusted gross margin, a benefit it does not expect to continue. A new Canadian tariff could also cost around $10 million a quarter. Both are reasons the consensus margin could prove too high.
Against that pressure, management expects price increases ranging from the high single digits to the high teens or low twenties percent, depending on the product line. These increases will take effect as more of the backlog becomes revenue, so the margin could also beat the forecast.
Sales present the smaller risk, and supply is the limit on them. The consensus forecast of $8.45 billion for fiscal 2027 sits just above management’s floor. Management said revenue would be greater than its $8.3 billion to $8.4 billion floor with more supply. The company expects supply to stay tight into 2027 and likely into 2028, so a shortage of parts would hold sales near that floor, slightly under the forecast.
Ciena’s sales are keeping the forecast’s pace, and its reported quarterly net margin has climbed to 15.9%. The step up to 20.8% in fiscal 2027 is the part the company has not yet shown. If that margin arrives, the price on fiscal 2027 profit is the figure that counts. If the margin stalls, fiscal 2027 profit will fall short of the forecast, the stock will cost more than 29.2 times what Ciena actually earns, and it will stay expensive. Ciena’s net margin in its fiscal fourth-quarter report, expected in December 2026, is the number to watch.
