Chinese wireless carriers added a total of 4.8 million subscribers during February, marking a slight month-over-month decline in the growth rate. While market leader China Mobile  (NYSE:CHL) added close to 2.5 million subscribers, China Telecom (NYSE:CHA) – the smallest of the three carriers – remained the fastest growing player, adding a total of 1.75 million subscribers. China Telecom’s expanding 4G coverage (890k 4G base stations vs 740k for China Unicom, as of December), coupled with its early-mover advantage in populous cities compared to China Unicom, have allowed the carrier to gain market share at the expense of its larger rival.

The 4G market remained a mixed bag during February, with China Mobile adding or migrating just about 6.4 million subscribers, compared to average 4G monthly adds of over 15 million subscribers over the last 12 months. However, China Unicom and China Telecom both fared reasonably well, adding 5.6 million and 5 million subscribers, respectively.
