AppLovin (APP) stock trades at 19.9 times earnings over the last twelve months, compared with 22.9 for the S&P 500. Shareholders paying that price need to know what they are buying, and AppLovin’s priorities have shifted. During the fiscal Q4 2024 call in February 2025, management called adjusted EBITDA per employee its favorite metric going forward. On the latest call in August 2026, it emphasized something else. So what does management talk up now?

AppLovin Now Talks Up Model Performance And Compute

On the fiscal Q2 2026 call, management described AppLovin as an advertising platform whose economics improve as its models improve. Management said gaming is still the majority of revenue, and called model performance the single biggest driver of gaming’s growth. AppLovin also said it has invested in changes to build more complex models that benefit far more from additional training compute.

The metric management offered in February 2025 focused on people instead. Adjusted EBITDA per employee divides management’s internal profit measure by headcount, and the company put it at approximately $3 million on a run-rate basis during the fiscal Q4 2024 call. On that same call, management said AppLovin signed an exclusive term sheet to sell all of its Apps business, adding that the company had never been a game developer at heart. Management raised the figure to about $4 million in May 2025, but it has not mentioned it on the last two calls. It now explains the business through its models.

Is AppLovin’s Profit Keeping Pace With Sales?

Measured against a year earlier, it is. AppLovin’s operating margin increased to 77.7% in fiscal Q2 2026 from 76.1% in fiscal Q2 2025. Sales grew 52.8% in the latest quarter. Management credited the core gaming business and the consumer vertical, meaning its advertisers that are not gaming companies. That sales growth is down from 77.0% a year earlier.

Compute costs accompanied the new focus. Out of each incremental dollar of revenue, management said AppLovin spends about $0.10 on compute, a level within its guidance. Management also said higher compute for training and new models was the primary driver of the rise in costs from the first quarter, and the latest quarter’s margin slipped from 78.2% in fiscal Q1 2026.

What Does AppLovin’s New Focus Mean For You?

For a holder, the shift is more concerning than reassuring, and the reason is growth rather than profit. Management called improving its core models the primary driver of its near-term growth, and said there is no guarantee of a lift in every three-month period. The outlook for fiscal Q3 2026 does not assume model releases that have not yet been deployed.

Management did say a material model uplift arrived early in fiscal Q3 2026, following a quarter with a lighter than normal pace of model improvement. So the lower price per dollar of earnings than the S&P 500 comes with a catch: by management’s own account, near-term growth rests mainly on model gains it cannot promise on a schedule.

AppLovin’s revenue growth for fiscal Q3 2026 against management’s guide of 46% to 48% is the number to watch when the company reports in November 2026.

How To Act On APP?

Not necessarily on AppLovin alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. AppLovin is one. Over the five years to October 2026, its stock rose 177%, ahead of all 17 other companies in Advertising, where the typical company fell 68%.

Finding companies like these takes comparison across industries and sectors, and that is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does. It holds 30 quality companies in equal weight and, since its inception in September 2020, has returned more than 105%, ahead of a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap and Russell 2000. See how we find the leaders.
