Over the last twelve months, one company has kept a little over 4 cents of every dollar in sales after the costs of running the business. That company is Tenable (TENB), the exposure management company behind the Tenable One platform, and this operating margin is its highest in at least eight years. So what would you guess Tenable usually keeps?

How Unusual Is This For Tenable?

Historically, Tenable has usually lost money on its operations. Across the twelve-month periods since the end of 2017, its middle value is an operating loss of 8.3% of sales, compared with the current 4.2% margin.

Twelve months ended Operating margin
2018-06-30 (Q2 FY2018) -24.2%
2019-06-30 (Q2 FY2019) -27.6%
2020-06-30 (Q2 FY2020) -19.6%
2021-06-30 (Q2 FY2021) -4.5%
2022-06-30 (Q2 FY2022) -10.6%
2023-06-30 (Q2 FY2023) -7.7%
2024-06-30 (Q2 FY2024) -3.5%
2025-06-30 (Q2 FY2025) -1.5%
2026-06-30 (Q2 FY2026) 4.2%

Twelve months in each row, ending at the same fiscal quarter end in each year, 2018-06-30 (Q2 FY2018) to 2026-06-30 (Q2 FY2026).

Tenable surpassed a record set just one quarter earlier, when its margin reached 2.2% over the twelve months to March 2026. Because each of the last two quarter ends established a new high, this is a fresh record that Tenable is still extending rather than a one-off. Put plainly, a company that operated at a loss for most of these years now earns a small operating profit.

What Is Behind Tenable’s Record Profit Margin?

Management says Tenable is selling more of its Tenable One platform, and at higher prices. On the July 29, 2026 call, management said the platform accounted for half of new business in the quarter to June, up from 40% a year earlier. Following pricing and packaging changes earlier in the year, more customers chose the Advanced version, which sells at a notably higher price than stand-alone vulnerability management. Management credited growth in the platform and “meaningful operating leverage” for results above its own forecasts.

Tenable’s net margin, the share of sales it keeps as profit, is also at its highest in these years, sitting at 0.6% over the last twelve months. Sales have grown from a year earlier in each of the last 34 quarters, although the 8.6% rise in the quarter to June was the slowest among them.

Is The Latest Quarter Still Improving?

The latest quarter still shows improvement against a year ago. In the quarter to June 2026, Tenable kept 4.8% of sales as operating profit, compared with a loss of 3.0% in the same quarter of 2025. A twelve-month figure moves slowly, and the newest quarter can sometimes fall short of the record. Here, it does not: the June quarter sits above the twelve-month figure. That holds on our data’s 4.8%, which standardizes the company’s filings, and on the 4.6% GAAP operating margin in the company’s own release. As a result, Tenable’s newest results are stronger than its record, not weaker.

The steps between recent quarters remain small, however. Tenable’s single-quarter margin has stayed between 4.3% and 4.8% in each of the last three quarters.

When The Record Is Next Tested

For the quarter to September 2026, management expects an operating margin of 24.9% at the midpoint, based on its own adjusted measure rather than the reported one. The June quarter came in at 24.7% on that same adjusted measure. During the July call, management also raised its full-year outlook across the board.

Tenable stock returned 60.6% over the past year, against 15.3% for the S&P 500.

The figure to watch at Tenable’s next report is its reported operating margin for the quarter to September 2026. In the twelve-month figure, that quarter replaces one with a 2.8% margin, so the company can extend the record without matching June’s 4.8%.
