Synopsys (SNPS) stock trades at 80.8 times its earnings over the past twelve months, against 22.9 for the S&P 500. Shareholders paying that price need to know what they are buying, and Synopsys shifts its priorities. During the fiscal Q3 2025 call in September 2025, management emphasized the underperformance in its IP business, which consists of chip designs Synopsys licenses to other chipmakers. The company no longer highlights that shortfall. So what does management emphasize now?

Synopsys Now Talks Up AI Demand And Ansys

During its fiscal Q3 2026 call on August 26, 2026, management made the case for chip design driven by AI. It said that design activity is highest among AI and high-performance compute customers, and it highlighted Multiphysics Fusion, the first product built with Ansys, the simulation business Synopsys bought in July 2025.

A year earlier, the message was different. On the fiscal Q3 2025 call, management said underperformance in the IP business primarily impacted results, as deals it had expected failed to materialize. The company pointed to new export restrictions that disrupted design starts in China, along with challenges at a major foundry customer that manufactures chips for others. Management also said that internal roadmap and resource decisions did not yield their intended results.

How Big Is Design IP Next To Ansys?

The Design IP segment brought in $1.75 billion in fiscal 2025, accounting for about a quarter of company revenue. Segment revenue fell 8.1% that year, while the company’s other segment, Design Automation, grew 25.6%, an increase that includes revenue from Ansys after the purchase.

Management said the Design IP segment returned to growth in fiscal Q3 2026, posting revenue of $474 million, up about 11% from the weak quarter a year earlier. That result sits close to the segment’s average quarter in fiscal 2024, when it brought in $1.91 billion. Ansys generated about $711 million in the same quarter, or about 1.5 times Design IP’s revenue. Synopsys also sold off part of its IP business during that quarter, the processor IP solutions business, a move management said it made to focus on the areas of growth.

Should Synopsys Holders Welcome Its IP Recovery?

For the most part, the change is reassuring. Management now presents IP as a source of growth rather than a problem. On the August call, executives said that the Factory 2 model for customized IP shifts Synopsys from licensing alone to a combination of licensing and royalties. On September 30, 2026, Synopsys and Amazon announced a multi-year IP agreement worth more than $1 billion for Amazon’s custom chips, an arrangement built on that license-plus-royalty model.

The return to year-over-year growth is still one quarter old, following a year in which the segment’s revenue fell. The IP division also earns less per dollar of sales than the rest of Synopsys. Management put the adjusted operating margin of Design IP at 26.5% in fiscal Q3 2026, against 45.2% for Design Automation on the same adjusted basis. At those margins, a dollar of IP sales earns Synopsys less than a dollar of Design Automation sales. When Synopsys is expected to report in December 2026, Design IP revenue growth, measured against the 11% of fiscal Q3 2026, is the number to watch. That figure will no longer include the processor IP business, which the year-ago quarter still had.
