Is Arista Stock’s Winning Streak Skill Or Luck?

Arista Networks (ANET) builds network switches for AI systems and company campuses. Over the last five years, its stock has beaten the S&P 500 every single year. A record like that looks like the mark of an exceptional business. So take a guess: of nearly 490 large U.S. stocks, how many pulled off the same five-year run?

How Rare Is Arista’s Winning Streak?
Arista is one of just six. Out of the 486 current S&P 500 members with five years of prices, only six stocks climbed more than the index during each of the five twelve-month periods, based on price changes before dividends.
| Period | The stock | S&P 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 29, 2021 to Oct 31, 2022 | +18.0% | -15.9% |
| Oct 31, 2022 to Nov 1, 2023 | +74.4% | +9.4% |
| Nov 1, 2023 to Nov 1, 2024 | +87.0% | +35.2% |
| Nov 1, 2024 to Nov 5, 2025 | +42.5% | +18.6% |
| Nov 5, 2025 to Nov 6, 2026 | +21.6% | +8.5% |
Price changes over periods of 252 trading sessions each, dividends excluded.
Even beating the index once is hard. Fewer than half of these stocks managed it in three of the five years, and only 29.6% did so in the twelve months to November 2025. Trailing the index is the typical outcome for a single stock in most years, and a five-year winning streak is rare.
Could A Streak Like This Be Luck?
In a group this large, a few stocks will build long streaks even if no company performs better than the rest. About 43% of these stocks beat the index in a typical year. Suppose those winners emerged by pure chance. If you put all 486 names in a hat and pulled out 43% of them as the winners each year for five years in a row, about seven names would come out every single time. That means about seven companies would record a five-year winning streak with no skill involved at all.
In fact, six companies have such a streak, which is about as many as luck alone would give. Some of the six may be there on merit and some by chance. From the share price alone, there is no way to tell which is which, Arista included.
Can’t tell skill from luck? Then don’t stake everything on one streak. Plan for a crash and a rally instead.
Did Arista’s Profit Grow Through The Streak?
Arista mostly sells products, including its Etherlink switches, alongside services that brought in 15.9% of its revenue in fiscal 2025. Its profit rose in every one of the five years of the streak. Net income increased 505.7% over the whole stretch, while the share price rose 567.0%.
Rising profit stood behind the streak in every year, and profit grew nearly as much as the stock did. That provides evidence a reader can check, rather than a ruling on skill or luck.
What To Watch Instead Of The Streak
Arista’s sales are still climbing quickly. Fiscal Q3 2026 revenue rose 58.5% from a year earlier, which management called the largest growth in its history as a public company. On the November 3, 2026 call, management guided to revenue growth of 38% to 40% for fiscal 2027 and said it expects its AI networking sales to double.
A streak shows what the share price did, and what the business does next will show up in its profit. When Arista reports in February 2027, the figure to watch is how fast its twelve-month profit grew.
