The consolidated earnings-growth metric, that management once led with, no longer opens its remarks, and the businesses the replacement metrics measure move at very different speeds.

Walt Disney (DIS) has changed the yardstick it hands shareholders. About two years ago the story ran on one consolidated earnings-growth number that let you judge the whole business at once. In its August 5 remarks, the headline figures were largely operating measures, most speaking for one business at a time. The operations underneath are improving, yet the stock fell about 7% over the past 12 months while the S&P 500 gained 22%.

High Single-Digit Adjusted EPS Growth Was The Old Anchor

That anchor came from the company itself: management pointed shareholders to high single-digit adjusted EPS growth, one figure covering everything. The only adjusted EPS growth figure in the August 5 call came from an analyst, not from management: a reaffirmed double-digit growth rate for fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027, higher than the high single-digit pace the company used to lead with, and no longer the line management opens on. Management’s answer to the analyst came back in segment language, naming Experiences and Streaming as the growth drivers. Disney changed chief executives five months ago, and that call is the clearest sign the vocabulary changed with the job.

Segment Operating Income And A Streaming Margin Took Its Place

What management leads with now sits higher up the income statement and lower down the org chart. Total segment operating income came in ahead of prior guidance, up 21%. Streaming turned in a 13% SVOD operating margin in fiscal Q3, the same quarter it passed an app-unification milestone letting Hulu subscribers link profiles on Disney+. Global guests rose 4% year over year on strength at Walt Disney World and added capacity at Disney Cruise Line. None of those is a per-share figure, and two of them describe one business each. The businesses are not moving at one speed: Experiences grew 6% over the past year, Entertainment 3%, and Sports not at all.

Revenue Is Accelerating, And Sports Is The One Flat Line

The company-wide picture the old metric carried is not soft. Revenue grew 4.6% over the trailing twelve months against a three-year average of 4.0%, and an operating margin of 15.2% sits above its own three-year average of 13.4%. That profile, widening margins on accelerating revenue, is what the businesses in the Trefis High Quality Portfolio have in common. The exception is sports, where the proof point management put in its opening remarks was audience: NBA finals and NHL postseason viewership more than doubled versus the prior season across ESPN and ABC. The reported Sports segment is 18% of revenue and did not grow at all over the past year.

A Pivot, Not A Retreat, With One November Test

A shareholder gets more usable detail from three operating metrics than from one blended figure. What is lost is not the single per-share line itself, which was reaffirmed for fiscal 2026 and fiscal 2027, but its place at the front of management’s own remarks. The concrete test is the fiscal Q4 call scheduled for November: whether management leads on sports with a financial number rather than a ratings record. Until then, the range the options market is pricing over the next twelve months is the cleaner way to size how big a move is already expected.

Unanswered Questions Cost The Biggest Holders The Most

When management leaves questions open, the uncertainty weighs heaviest on whoever owns the most of the stock. A position that has grown large enough to matter is worth sizing deliberately rather than by accident. What a position that size would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
