What Happens To Tempus AI Stock If Its Cash Burn Continues?

Tempus AI (TEM) management said on its July 30, 2026 call that it expects positive free cash flow by year-end. Over the twelve months to June 2026, the company spent $273 million more than it took in. To get there, Tempus AI needs its Diagnostics and data businesses to cover their costs even as it buys Personalis.
If the cash gap does not close, how long can Tempus AI keep paying its bills?

How Long Would Tempus AI’s Cash Last?
About three years, if the last twelve months simply repeated. At the end of June 2026, Tempus AI held $816 million in cash and short-term investments, roughly three times its twelve-month cash gap. That count ignores the debt, which is larger than the cash.
The business came close to breaking even on operating cash in its latest quarter. Tempus AI used $7.5 million of cash in its operations in fiscal Q2 2026, compared with $73.3 million in fiscal Q1. Management said the improvement came as expected. Diagnostics revenue grew 20% in that quarter, and the data licensing and modeling business, Insights, grew 36%.
The stock has swung hard before, for reasons unrelated to cash. It fell 57% in the 2025 tariff shock, against 19% for the S&P 500.
What Tempus AI Has Against A Longer Gap
Tempus AI has growing sales and cheap debt on its side so far. On the July 30 call, management raised its 2026 revenue guide to a range of $1.595 billion to $1.605 billion, representing about 25% growth. That is a forecast, not a result.
The company also completed a $460 million offering of convertible notes that pay 0.0% interest and fall due in 2032. It used part of the money to repay an older loan, a move management expects to save over $30 million a year in interest, against $55.3 million of interest expense over the past twelve months. Tempus AI’s debt equals 11.9% of its market value, against 19.4% for the S&P 500.
How Much Tempus AI Owes As It Buys Personalis
As of the end of June 2026, Tempus AI owes $628 million more than it holds in cash and short-term investments.
Tempus AI announced an agreement to buy Personalis on July 20, 2026, as a 100% stock transaction, while keeping the option to pay up to half in cash. Management said that depending on the stock price, it intends to fund a large portion of that cash with debt to limit dilution for shareholders. Any cash paid for Personalis would come out of the same reserves, or add to a debt that already exceeds them.
What Would Show Tempus AI’s Cash Gap Widening
Management expects adjusted EBITDA, its own measure of earnings before some costs, of about $65 million for 2026. That too is a forecast. Management also expects free cash flow to keep improving in 2027, even with Personalis.
Tempus AI’s operating cash came close to even in fiscal Q2 2026, following larger outflows in the quarters just before it. At the same time, its newest debt pays no interest and is not due until 2032. Management said in July that it had begun working to put a debt facility in place for the Personalis cash. Free cash flow for fiscal Q3 2026, due in the report expected in November 2026, is the number to watch. A return to outflows like the $73.3 million of operating cash used in fiscal Q1 would show the gap widening.
