S&P 500 Movers | Winners: AKAM, MRNA, INTC | Losers: MPC, VLO, UPS
A strong day for the broad market saw some extreme moves, but a closer look reveals that some of these stories are not new.
The S&P 500 gained +1.5% on Monday, but the day’s extremes were far wider. Akamai Technologies (AKAM) led the index with a +12.3% return.
This raises a key question for any daily list of market leaders and laggards: are these one-day reactions, or are they continuations of an existing trend? The names below show both kinds of moves.

What does a big daily move actually tell you?
The tables earlier in this report show the largest percentage moves, which are always signals of heightened attention and risk. They are never an instruction. A disciplined reader uses a large price change as a prompt to check the business fundamentals behind the stock.
For example, the day’s biggest winner, Akamai Technologies, trades at 41.3 times trailing earnings. The day’s biggest loser, Marathon Petroleum, trades at 13.6 times trailing earnings. These are just starting points for the real work of understanding what you own.
Either side of these lists can be a lead worth following, with the same follow-up question: does the business back the move? For the winners, our Guidance Momentum screen tracks which companies raised their own forward numbers. For the losers, our Buy the Dip screen flags which marked-down names still have the fundamentals to recover.
Volatility Is The Cost Of Owning Stocks. Concentration Makes It A Bill
Every name on these lists made a move big enough to notice. A diversified holder reads that as noise; a concentrated holder feels it as real money. The difference is not the stock, it is the portfolio around it.
Building that portfolio is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does: roughly 30 businesses with the cash generation and balance-sheet strength to absorb bad days, selected and rebalanced by rules. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, the S&P MidCap 400, and the Russell 2000. Let the movers list remind you why diversification exists.
