A down day for the indexes hid persistent strength and weakness in a few key names.

Skyworks Solutions (SWKS) returned +13.6% on a day the S&P 500 returned -0.4%. The broader market was soft, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq-100 also finishing lower.

But today’s extremes are not all new. Some of the largest moves extend trends that have been running for weeks. The key question is whether a stock’s presence on these lists signals a new event or the continuation of an old one. The day’s biggest winners and losers are below.

Are these one-day wonders or established trends?

Some moves show clear persistence. Today’s strongest name, Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), also appears on the one-month winners list with a return of +29.3%. Its strength is not a one-day event, as it still gained +13.8% over the other sessions in that period.

The pattern also holds for underperformance. Axon Enterprise (AXON) is on both the one-day and one-month losers lists. Its one-month return is -27.9%, and it still lost 20.0% over the other sessions, showing its weakness has been building.

So what should I do with this information?

The tables of largest moves earlier in this report are a map of market attention, not a set of instructions. A large percentage change is simply information. It signals that something has focused investor interest on a company, for better or worse.

The disciplined follow-up is to check the business behind the stock price. Today’s biggest winner, Skyworks Solutions, trades at 46.7 times trailing earnings while its revenue grew 0.1% over the last twelve months. The day’s biggest loser, Coinbase Global (COIN), which returned -10.1%, saw its revenue decline 10.4% over the last twelve months. These are the starting points for research, not the conclusion.

The next step is never to trade the list; it is to test it. Our Guidance Momentum screen shows which risers have management raising guidance behind them, and our Buy the Dip screen shows which of the fallers still generate the growth and cash that make a recovery plausible.

Volatility Is The Cost Of Owning Stocks. Concentration Makes It A Bill

Every name on these lists made a move big enough to notice. A diversified holder reads that as noise; a concentrated holder feels it as real money. The difference is not the stock, it is the portfolio around it.

Building that portfolio is what the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio does: roughly 30 businesses with the cash generation and balance-sheet strength to absorb bad days, selected and rebalanced by rules. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, the S&P MidCap 400, and the Russell 2000. Let the movers list remind you why diversification exists.
