Where The Selling Ran Deepest: 88 Stocks At 52-Week Lows
Large, established companies are appearing on a growing list of market lows, raising questions about value versus damage.
As of Tuesday, September 15, there are 88 US and Canada-listed stocks in the Trefis coverage universe trading at their 52-week lows. The largest company on the list is TJX Companies (TJX), with a market value of about $137.8 billion, after its stock declined 18.1% over the last month.
With 21 of the 88 names also S&P 500 members, the weakness is not confined to the market’s edges. The question is whether these lows reflect a temporary markdown or a permanent impairment of the underlying business.

A falling stock price does not always mean a shrinking business.
Lowe’s Companies (LOW) is the second-largest name on the list, and its stock has declined 10.9% over the last month. The company’s fundamentals tell a different story. Lowe’s Companies (LOW) trades at 16.4 times trailing earnings, and its revenue grew 8.2% over the last twelve months, and its free cash flow yield is 6.4%.
A 52-week low is a reason to look, not a reason to buy.
A list of stocks at their weakest prices of the year is a useful screen for ideas. It can surface both broken companies and healthy businesses that have been sold off. The disciplined next step is always the same: check the business fundamentals behind the stock price. A low price on its own is just a number, not an argument.
Weakness Is Information. It Is Not An Instruction
A 52-week low tells you what the market thinks today. It does not tell you what to do, and acting on price alone is how value traps get bought. The missing ingredient is always the same: is the business still sound?
Asking that question across thousands of stocks, every day, is exactly how the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio is built: roughly 30 names that pass the quality screens, held with rules instead of nerve. It has a track record of outpacing a benchmark that combines the S&P 500, the S&P MidCap 400, and the Russell 2000. Let the low list sharpen your watchlist, and let the portfolio carry the risk.
