Utilities expanding the power grid are the core customers of Quanta Services (PWR), and the company’s stock has beaten the S&P 500 in each of the last five years. A run like that looks like proof that Quanta is an exceptional company. Take a guess: out of 486 large U.S. stocks, how many did the same?

How Rare Is Quanta’s Winning Streak?

It is very rare. Out of 486 current S&P 500 members with five years of prices, Quanta is one of only six stocks whose shares rose more than the index in each of those five years. Here is Quanta’s run, with price changes measured before dividends:

Period The stock S&P 500
Oct 28, 2021 to Oct 28, 2022 +16.2% -15.1%
Oct 28, 2022 to Oct 31, 2023 +18.4% +7.5%
Oct 31, 2023 to Oct 31, 2024 +80.5% +36.0%
Oct 31, 2024 to Nov 4, 2025 +45.4% +18.7%
Nov 4, 2025 to Nov 5, 2026 +16.0% +8.6%

Price changes over periods of 252 trading sessions each, dividends excluded.

Beating the index in a single year is ordinary. In the latest year, 57.2% of those stocks did it. Stringing five such years together is a feat almost none of them managed.

Could A Streak Like This Be Luck?

With this many stocks, a few would string together five winning years even if no company were better run than another. In a typical year, about 43% of these stocks beat the index. Suppose the winners were decided by pure luck. If you put all 486 names in a hat each year and pulled out 43% of them, about seven names would be drawn in all five years. You would expect about seven companies to have a five-year winning streak with no skill involved at all.

In fact, six companies have such a streak, slightly fewer than the random draw produces. Some of the six may be there on merit, but there are no more streaks than luck alone would hand out. No one can tell from Quanta’s share price alone which kind its run is.

Did Quanta’s Profit Grow Through The Streak?

Mostly, yes. Quanta’s Electric segment brought in 80.8% of its revenue in fiscal 2025, and the Underground and Infrastructure segment made up the rest. The company’s twelve-month profit rose in four of the five years.

Across the whole stretch, profit grew 205.2%, compared to a 318.9% rise in the share price. The year to October 2022 was the one year when profit did not rise. The shares beat the index during that period, but profit for the twelve months to September 2022 was 21% below the year before. That does not settle whether the streak is skill or luck. It does mean the shares rose alongside a business that was earning more in most of those years.

What To Watch Instead Of The Streak

The business is still growing fast. In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, Quanta’s revenue rose 57.4% from a year earlier, and its profit more than doubled. On the October 29, 2026 call, management reported a record backlog and raised its full-year 2026 expectations across all metrics.

A streak is a record of the share price, while profit is a record of the business. The figure to watch is Quanta’s profit growth, which the company is expected to report next in February 2027.

Does This Mean You Should Act On PWR?

Our purpose is to inform you with unique data so you make the right investment decisions. That said, betting on a single stock is always risky, no matter which direction you choose.

There is a smarter approach. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has returned 105%, beating the benchmark that combines the three major indices – the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking. If that is how you want to invest, the HQ Portfolio is the place to start.
