Can Oracle Stock Fund a $638B Backlog Without Breaking Margins?

The supply bottleneck management used to name has gone quiet, and what replaced it changes the kind of company you own.

Oracle (ORCL) used to tell investors that its cloud build was rationed by parts rather than by demand. That caveat has faded from the front of the story. In its place sits a construction program the company must fund before it can bill it. Same ticker, different bet: shares are down 36.0% over the past twelve months as the market weighs the sheer scale of the funding plan and near-term margin pressure against the surge in booked demand.

In Early 2025, The Limit Management Named Was Component Delays

Demand was running far ahead of supply, management said, and the component delays slowing cloud capacity expansion would ease. Components have not gone away, but they surface now as a cost question, not a capacity one: on rising memory and hard drive prices, management says its longer contracts pass the cost to customers instead of into margin.

Funding The Build Is The New Version Of Waiting For Parts

The size of the swap shows up in what customers have contracted for: $130 billion in early 2025, and $638 billion at the close of fiscal 2026. That book is not a queue waiting on parts; rather than naming a bottleneck, management frames the massive capital program as fully pulled by committed customer demand—leaving the funding burden as the operational reality investors must now underwrite. The guided figure is a net cash outlay for capital expenditures of about $70 billion in fiscal 2027, with a funding plan of around $40 billion of debt and equity behind it. Both numbers sit against a company whose annual revenue first passed $67 billion in fiscal 2026. To own Oracle from here is to underwrite that construction program, a different proposition from the Trefis High Quality Portfolio, which does not depend on the handful of largest technology names to produce its returns.

The Delivered Gigawatts Suggest The Delays Eased

The quiet looks like a solved problem, not a dropped one. Oracle delivered more than 1.2 gigawatts of capacity to customers across fiscal 2026, and expects fiscal Q1 2027 alone to approach a gigawatt, close to what the previous four quarters delivered combined. A business still rationed by suppliers does not deliver most of a year’s capacity in a quarter. The business under the silence is growing faster, not slower: revenue grew 17.4% over the trailing twelve months against a three-year average of 10.6%. Most of the AI infrastructure signed in fiscal Q4 2026 was prepaid or on a bring your own hardware basis. The $20 billion to $25 billion of customer prepayments and timing is why reported capital spending runs above the net outlay, so the $70 billion is the part Oracle funds itself.

Infrastructure Margin Is The Open Question The Silence Leaves Behind

So the silence is reassuring: that constraint looks like one the company built past. What changed is what a holder underwrites, and management has been plain about the cost. Fiscal 2027 gross margin steps down on the timing of the data center ramps and on mix, pressure that management calls near-term. Management has outlined a 30% to 40% margin profile for OCI, its cloud infrastructure business, and expects infrastructure margin to improve as those sites reach full contractual revenue. Whether it does is the main thing the fiscal 2027 reports will settle. Management guides fiscal 2027 revenue growth to 34% in constant currency, and a guidance momentum screen is where a guide that size shows up.

Unanswered Questions Cost The Biggest Holders The Most

When management leaves questions open, the uncertainty weighs heaviest on whoever owns the most of the stock. Concentration tends to arrive by accident rather than by decision.
