Can Micron Stock Fall 30%?

Micron Technology (MU) stock’s risk of a 30% fall depends largely on how long its operating margin holds. Micron kept 74.6% of its sales as operating profit over the twelve months ended September 3, 2026, compared with 26.1% a year earlier. Declines of that size are common for this stock, which has dropped 30% or more from a high to a later low within the same year in 7 of the 10 calendar years from 2016 to 2025. So what lifted Micron’s margin this far, this fast?

Micron Ties Its Margin To Memory Price Increases
Management has tied Micron’s margin to the price of memory. Sales reached $54.2 billion in fiscal Q4 2026, up 379.3% from a year earlier. In its September 30, 2026, results release, the company said AI-driven demand and strong operational execution position it for a record fiscal 2027. Management also guided for only single-digit growth in DRAM and NAND bits shipped during fiscal Q1 2027, measured against the prior quarter.
During the fiscal Q4 2026 call, management said the margin gains it expects over the rest of fiscal 2027 would come from continued price increases at a more moderate pace, noting it had long said price increases would eventually moderate. The margin now depends on prices that management itself expects to rise more slowly.
Micron’s Margin Is Its Highest In Ten Years
Micron’s twelve-month operating margin is its highest across all 40 fiscal quarter ends since fiscal Q1 2017. The low point during that span arrived at fiscal Q1 2024, when the twelve-month operating margin fell to -39%.
Over the latest twelve months, Micron earned $99.3 billion of operating profit on $133 billion of sales. At the margin recorded a year earlier, those same sales would have produced about $34.7 billion.
Micron stock trades at 11.7 times its trailing earnings, compared with 22.9 for the S&P 500. The shares have also fallen 18.8% over the month to October 23, 2026, against a loss of about 1% for the S&P 500.
Management Expects Tight Memory Supply Through 2028
Management expects market conditions to stay tight through 2028 and said it expects to sustain strong financial performance. Start-up costs will partly offset the gains from higher prices and a better mix. Micron also held $43.4 billion of cash and short-term investments at September 3, 2026, against $5.18 billion of debt.
A holder has reason for measured concern rather than alarm. Micron’s margin is at its highest quarter-end level in the ten years of figures, and management expects the price increases behind it to slow. The concern would grow if management stopped describing the market as tight. Micron’s operating margin is the number to watch when it reports fiscal Q1 2027 results, expected in December 2026.
