Is Altria’s Dividend Enough To Make Up For Its Share Price?

The seller of Marlboro cigarettes and nicotine pouches, Altria (MO), raised its quarterly dividend in August for the 61st time in 57 years. The share price may have left investors holding the stock for that cash slightly behind, trailing the S&P 500 from October 27, 2021 to November 4, 2026. Once the dividends are counted on both sides, Altria’s and the market’s, how do you think a five-year holder came out?

How Far Has Altria Stock Trailed The Market?
Altria did not trail by much: on price alone, the stock rose 64.2% from October 27, 2021 to November 4, 2026, while the S&P 500 rose 68.9%. This difference left Altria 4.7 percentage points behind the market. That lag depends on the start date: measured from November 4, 2021, Altria’s price rose 74.9% against 64.2% for the S&P 500.
An investor watching only the share price saw Altria nearly match the market over that window while still falling a little short.
How Much Did Altria’s Dividends Add?
With dividends reinvested, Altria stock returned 141.2% over the same five years. The payouts added 77.0 percentage points to that total, exceeding what the share price gained on its own.
More than half of what a five-year Altria holder earned came from dividends rather than the share price.
Did The Dividends Close The Gap For Altria Holders?
A fair comparison counts each side with its respective dividends, because companies in the S&P 500 pay dividends too.
| Return from Oct 27, 2021 to Nov 4, 2026 | On price alone | With dividends reinvested |
|---|---|---|
| The stock | +64.2% | +141.2% |
| S&P 500 | +68.9% | +80.2% |
Before taxes and costs. The S&P 500 is measured through the SPDR S&P 500 ETF.
With its dividends counted, the S&P 500 returned 80.2% over the five years, leaving Altria with dividends 61.0 percentage points ahead. Altria’s dividends did more than close the gap on price: they turned a small lag behind the market into a wide lead.
The start date matters, though. Over the ten years to November 4, 2026, Altria with dividends trails the S&P 500 with dividends by 188.4 percentage points.
What This Means If You Own Altria For Income
Over the five years, Altria’s dividends added 77.0 percentage points to its return, against 11.3 points for the dividends paid by S&P 500 companies. Investors holding Altria for income over those five years gave up a little share-price growth and took back far more in dividends than the market paid.
Tobacco generates that cash. Smokeable products brought in $20.5 billion of revenue in fiscal 2025, and oral tobacco products, where nicotine pouches sit, brought in $2.8 billion. Management said on its October 29, 2026 call that the August dividend increase fits its goal of growing the dividend at a mid-single-digit rate each year.
Anyone holding Altria for income should watch how its return with dividends compares with the S&P 500’s return with dividends over the planned holding period, since the five-year and ten-year answers point in opposite directions.
