After a sharp pullback, Meta Platforms is testing a price floor that has held strong on seven prior occasions. The business arriving this time is different, setting up a classic standoff between history and today’s reality.

Meta Platforms (META) connects 3.6 billion people through its family of apps and sells advertising against that attention. After a 13% slide from its recent high, the stock now trades around $589 a share, a price zone where buyers have repeatedly stepped in to halt declines. This floor between $560.41 and $619.40 has been successfully defended seven times before. History says buyers show up here. Will they this time?

This Floor Has a Seven-Bounce History.

The pattern is striking. Since late 2024, every significant test of this price level has been met with a sharp rebound. Most of these are not minor rallies; the average peak gain following a successful defense has been 21%. The bounces have varied in speed and scale, from a swift 20% gain in just eight days in January 2026 to a more sustained 38% climb over 103 days starting in May 2025. This history creates a powerful precedent, suggesting a level of psychological and technical importance for the stock.

Peak Gain After Holding Days To That Peak
9/24/2024 5.8% 10
11/6/2024 29% 100
5/1/2025 38% 103
11/20/2025 14.3% 15
1/21/2026 20% 8
3/31/2026 20% 17
6/23/2026 21% 22

The Business Arrives Stronger, But With A Heavier Burden.

A stock does not bounce from a level just because it did so before. The business arriving at the floor is what matters. On that front, Meta’s core engine is firing. Trailing twelve-month revenue grew 28%, and its operating margin of 38% is more than double the S&P 500 median. Management credits its AI investments for these results, noting that new models generated an “8.3% increase in ad clicks and a 15.7% uplift in conversions on Facebook.” Engagement is also healthy, with global time spent on Instagram growing by double digits year-over-year.

But this is also where the story gets complicated. The company arrives at this floor with an enormous financial commitment. Management anticipates 2026 capital expenditures will be in the range of $130 billion to $145 billion, a large bet on building out its AI infrastructure. This spending has become a central question for investors, with some seeing the biggest risk to the stock as a bill without a clear payback date. With no specific outlook provided for 2027 spending, buyers are being asked to trust a plan whose total cost and timeline for returns remain undefined. This is the potential crack in the floor.

The Test Is Whether AI Profits Can Justify AI Costs.

A support level is a rhyme, not a law. The standoff for Meta is clear: the proven, AI-enhanced profitability of its current advertising business versus the large, open-ended cost of its future. For the floor to hold, investors must believe the former can comfortably fund the latter. The most direct signal of the ad engine’s health will come from near-term results. Management’s guidance for third-quarter revenue is a range of $61 billion to $64 billion. A result at or above the high end of that range would signal the core business has the momentum to carry the spending burden. A miss would give bears the evidence they need that the costs are outrunning the profits.

What Happens To Your Portfolio If The Floor Breaks?

A support level is a pattern rather than a promise, and betting heavily on it is where the risk hides. A sharp fall in a single name lands very differently when that position carries too much of your wealth.
