Johnson & Johnson

Consensus takes the multiple down by roughly a quarter over two years, and those earnings lean on margin rather than on selling more.

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) trades at about $262 a share, right at the top of its 52-week range after a twelve-month return of nearly 54%. That price works out to about 27.5 times the last twelve months of adjusted earnings, a full multiple for a business with roughly $98 billion of trailing revenue. What matters more is what you are paying once the expected earnings arrive.

What The Price Buys On The 2027 Numbers

On the fiscal 2026 consensus, today’s price is about 22.3 times earnings, and about 20.4 times on the 2027 figure. That is a multiple roughly 26% lower than the trailing one, with no move in the share price. The trailing figure sits on adjusted earnings with stock-based compensation added back, and the two adjusted measures are not defined identically, so part of that fall is basis, not earnings.

Consensus Is Buying Margin, Not Just Revenue

Consensus has earnings growing about 16.2% a year over those two years against revenue growth of about 5.3%, roughly three times the pace. Much of that gap is margin, less whatever the basis difference above accounts for. The revenue half is not the stretch: sales grew 8.1% over the past year. That margin has to come out of a business mid-swap in immunology. STELARA fell 55.7% in the second quarter of 2026 as biosimilars took share, while TREMFYA grew 71% in the same quarter, both on a constant-currency operational basis, and the newly launched ICOTYDE has drawn more than 10,000 patients onto therapy. The lost revenue is already in the base; the products replacing it are still absorbing launch spending. Trailing operating margin of 26.8% against a three-year average of 25.7% sits above trend, though enterprise margin on management’s own adjusted basis slipped in the second quarter. The company’s management guided at the start of 2026 for more than 50 basis points of adjusted pre-tax operating margin improvement and has since raised the figure to roughly 75 basis points—covering only a fraction of that implied two-year gap, with the rest left to 2027 or accounting basis differences. Margin that widens rather than erodes is the sort of profitability the Trefis High Quality Portfolio looks for in its holdings.

The Multiple, Not The Earnings, Is Where The Gain Lives

If the share price never moves, by 2027 the stock trades at about 20.4 times those earnings, which would show today’s price was not an overpay rather than deliver any gain. A holder is rewarded only if the market keeps paying more than that. Assume the multiple settles near 21.3 times the 2027 consensus, roughly halfway between the 2026 multiple and that floor, and the shares are worth about $275, some 5% above today’s price. If the market instead keeps paying near today’s 27.5 times on a comparable trailing basis, the gain is larger. Either way, the size of the gain is set by the multiple, since the earnings are the same in both cases, and it has to be weighed against a stock that has fallen as much as 28% from peak to trough in past market shocks. The company’s own guidance stops at fiscal 2026, so the far year rests on six analyst estimates, and whether management’s guidance keeps climbing is what to watch.

What A Stock Is Worth And How Much To Own Are Different Questions

Valuation says what a stock might be worth; it says nothing about how much of your wealth should ride on it. A position that has grown large enough to matter is worth sizing deliberately rather than by accident. What a position that size would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
