Is 50% Crash Risk For IonQ Stock Real?

A 50% fall in IonQ (IONQ) stock is a real risk, because it has happened before. Shares dropped at least that far within the year in four of the last five calendar years, posting a median worst yearly fall of 52.2%. They are down 43.6% over the past year, while the S&P 500 gained 15.1%. IonQ also just priced a $2.0 billion share sale, which its CEO said will speed up the commercialization of its full-stack quantum platform. Below are the events most likely to move IonQ stock over the next six months.
| What to watch | When | Which way it cuts |
|---|---|---|
| IonQ’s fiscal 2026 revenue outlook, to be reset for the combined company with SkyWater | next quarterly report | Either way |
| First customer systems on IonQ’s 256-qubit technology begin commissioning | first half of 2027 | Either way |
| IonQ’s all-stock purchase of Elisity closes, issuing new shares | no date stated | Against the stock |
| Atomic clock production under IonQ’s $28 million DARPA contract extension, with a further $30 million option | no date stated | In its favour |

IonQ’s First Revenue Outlook With SkyWater Included
During its August 5, 2026 call, management said IonQ’s next revenue outlook will cover the combined company with SkyWater, the chip foundry it bought on July 31, 2026. The current guide, which the company raised in August to $280 million to $290 million for fiscal 2026, covers IonQ alone.
The combined number will not simply add the two companies together. IonQ expected to spend about $120 million with SkyWater in fiscal 2026, which counts as revenue for SkyWater. Management noted that standard accounting requires intercompany transactions to be eliminated in consolidation, and that finance teams are actively working through these eliminations and purchase-price adjustments post-close before issuing a combined target.
Customers Getting IonQ’s 256-Qubit Machines
Management said on the August 5 call that IonQ plans to start commissioning customer systems built on its 256-qubit technology in the first half of 2027, a window that ends after the six months covered here. The company received its first fully integrated processors back from SkyWater for testing in the second quarter of 2026.
System sales already matter. Management said deployments of its fifth-generation computers at customers such as KISTI in Korea and QuantumBasel in Switzerland, were the largest reason second-quarter revenue beat its own expectations. IonQ ended June with $485 million of remaining performance obligations, representing revenue under contract but not yet booked. The commissioning schedule, updated at each quarterly report, is the thing to watch.
Paying For Elisity With IonQ Shares
IonQ has said it will buy cybersecurity company Elisity in an all-stock deal worth up to $1.3 billion, including up to $150 million in performance-based earnouts. Elisity adds tools to detect and defend against AI-driven cyberattacks.
Because IonQ pays in shares, current holders will own a smaller part of the company. The deal is worth up to about 11% of IonQ’s $11.5 billion market value. IonQ’s share count in its first quarterly report after the deal closes is the figure to watch.
Can You Hold IonQ Through Another Halving?
That depends on how much you hold, since IonQ stock has already fallen by more than half twice within the past year, and it is still 56.6% below its May 29, 2026 close of $72.07. Its worst fall ended on March 30, 2026, taking 57.7% off the share price from close to close. That slide was not steady: the shares jumped 21.7% in a single session in February 2026 along the way.
You could hold a stake in IonQ through a repeat only if it is small enough that losing more than half of it would not push you to sell before the combined revenue outlook, the first 256-qubit customer systems and the Elisity deal play out.
How To Act On IONQ?
Not necessarily on IonQ alone, if your goal is long-term wealth. Wealth is built by owning the companies that keep outperforming, the leaders of their industries, wherever they are. In IonQ’s own industry, Super Micro Computer stock rose 833% and Dell Technologies stock rose 772% over the five years to October 2026, while IonQ stock rose 224%.
