A lead that wide can come from riding a strong industry or from what the launch and space systems company built for itself. So was it the industry that lifted the stock, or Rocket Lab itself?

How Far Rocket Lab Is Ahead Of Its Industry

Rocket Lab shares climbed 304.6% over those five years. That placed the stock far ahead of the typical company in its industry, which gained 58.8%. This industry figure, like the sector and all-stock metrics below, tracks the median company of any size rather than an index.

1-year 3-year 5-year
Rocket Lab (RKLB) -18.5% 1186.1% 304.6%
Aerospace & Defense industry (median company) -17.9% 58.0% 58.8%

Total return to the October 23, 2026 close, including dividends; the S&P 500 row is the index level, price only. Industry, sector and all-stock rows are the median company of each group.

In short, Rocket Lab stock gained roughly five times as much as the typical aerospace and defense company.

Was It Rocket Lab’s Industry?

The broader industry did provide some help. Over the five years, Aerospace & Defense ranked fourth of 23 industries in the Industrials sector, while the typical Industrials company advanced a smaller 18.4%.

The typical stock across all sectors fell 4.2%, while the S&P 500 index, which the largest companies dominate, rose 66.9%. The industry acted as a tailwind, finishing ahead of its sector and the typical stock, though not the index. But the typical aerospace and defense company had that same tailwind and stayed far behind, so most of the lead came from Rocket Lab.

What Did Rocket Lab’s Business Do?

Rocket Lab expanded much faster than its industry. Revenue grew an average of 49.3% a year over the last three years, compared to 13.7% for the typical aerospace and defense company. Between the twelve months ending in June 2021 and the twelve months ending in June 2026, revenue increased 1276.4%.

The company still loses money, but far less on each sale. Its operating loss narrowed from 102.1% of revenue in the twelve months ending in June 2021 to 29.1% in the twelve months ending in June 2026. Its loss per share still widened, and its diluted share count rose 40.6% over the same years.

Measured at the end of June each year, investors paid about the same for each dollar of sales, 87.3 times in 2021 and 83.2 times in 2026. By the October 23, 2026 close, that multiple had fallen to 43.1 times. So the gain came from the business: far more revenue, and a much smaller loss on it.

In fiscal 2025, Space Systems generated most of the revenue, accounting for 66.9% of the total, with Launch Services making up the rest. Management said on its August 10, 2026 call that Space Systems’ second-quarter growth was primarily driven by its satellite manufacturing business. Over the past reported year, the twelve months ending in June 2026, revenue rose 52.5% from a year earlier.

Is Rocket Lab Still Ahead Over The Past Year?

No. Over the year ending in October 2026, Rocket Lab stock did better than only 32 of its 68 industry peers, meaning it no longer leads most of the group.

For the third quarter of 2026, management guided to revenue growth of 10% over the second quarter at the midpoint. Management also expects about 45.5% of its current backlog to turn into revenue within the next 12 months. Both figures are forecasts, not reported results.

Rocket Lab’s revenue growth from a year earlier is the figure to watch when it reports third-quarter results, expected in November 2026.

How To Act On RKLB?
