Comfort Systems USA (FIX) stock has lost 40% since October 6, its highest close of the past month. The steepest daily decline was also the most recent, a 15.1% drop on November 4. After a fall that steep, some holders want out while others want in, because a drop like this can mean the same business is trading at a discount or that the business has changed. So has Comfort Systems stock fallen this fast before, and did buying then pay off?

Comfort Systems Has Fallen This Fast Once Since 2010
Since 2010, Comfort Systems stock has recorded one earlier fall of this speed. The shares lost 40.4% in the 30 trading days to March 6, 2025. Buying on that day paid well, as the shares traded 320% higher twelve months later.
Realizing that gain took nerve and time. The stock initially slid further, posting a lowest close over the following year that was 9.5% below its March 6, 2025 price. The highest close arrived 355 days after March 6, 2025, nearly twelve months later.
That rebound offers a single example rather than a pattern. The previous fall also occurred while the broader market was dropping, with the S&P 500 losing 6.0% over the same weeks in 2025. Over the month of this recent fall, the S&P 500 slipped just 1.6%.

How Sound Is Comfort Systems’ Business Under The Fall?
Comfort Systems’ sales are still growing fast. Revenue climbed 53.7% from a year earlier in the third quarter of 2026. Management said its Electrical segment grew fastest, increasing by 85%. The company also reported that its backlog, the work customers have signed for but the company has not yet done, reached a new high of $17.8 billion at the end of that quarter.
Profit outpaced sales. The operating margin rose to 16.5% in the quarter, up from 15.4% a year earlier. Over the twelve months to September 2026, cash from operations equaled 24.0% of revenue, though management said third-quarter cash flow was lifted by $166 million in income taxes deferred to the fourth quarter. Management also credited favorable payment terms and collections from large technology customers.
The complication is the margin on each dollar of sales during 2026. Gross margin fell in Q2 2026 and dropped again in Q3 2026, ending at 24.8%. This was down from 26.3% in Q1 2026 and the same as a year earlier. Management said a larger share of equipment and materials in its costs added revenue but dampened margins, and that it does not represent that margins will go up. It also said the forces that have lifted margins are at least as strong as ever, and that 2027 gross margins are likely to stay in the strong ranges of recent quarters.
What Are You Paying For Comfort Systems Stock Now?
Buyers today are paying about the market’s price. Comfort Systems trades at 23.5 times earnings over the past twelve months, compared to 22.8 for the S&P 500. Its revenue growth averaged 36.5% over the last three twelve-month periods, against 6.1% for the S&P 500. Buyers today are paying roughly the market’s multiple for sales growth about six times the market’s.
Based on the price and the business, this fall looks more like a bargain than a warning, and buyers of the one earlier fall this fast did well. The reason for doubt is a gross margin that slid through 2026. For buying now to work, Comfort Systems has to turn its backlog into sales at gross margins close to 2026’s, which ran from 24.8% to 26.3%. Is that slide enough to make this fall a warning? Comfort Systems’ gross margin, in the report expected in February 2027, is the number to watch.
