Shares of CoreWeave (CRWV) dropped 57.6% between May 8 and November 4, 2026, trailing a 4.5% advance for the S&P 500. Much of that decline hit after October 6. By October 16, both the shares and bonds of CoreWeave were headed for steep weekly losses as investors grew uneasy over the debt financing behind the AI build-out. On November 4 alone, the shares fell 9.9% as CoreWeave and its peers traded lower after Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections. Yet the company’s latest quarter still showed sales more than doubling. So who pays for the data centers behind that growth, and at what cost?

CoreWeave Is Paying For Its Growth With Outside Money

Internal cash covers only a portion of CoreWeave’s ongoing build-out. Operations generated $6.91 billion in cash over the twelve months to June 30, 2026, but capital spending on new capacity left the company with negative free cash flow of $13.66 billion. Lenders and new shareholders cover the shortfall. Management said CoreWeave raised about $18 billion through debt, convertible notes and new shares in the second quarter of 2026 alone.

By June 30, 2026, CoreWeave’s debt stood at $51.61 billion. That is more than three times the $14.56 billion it owed a year earlier.

What CoreWeave’s Borrowing Means For Its Shareholders

Measured against the November 4 share price, CoreWeave’s June 30 debt represented 193.4% of the market value of all its shares, against the 19.2% ratio for the S&P 500. The company is also losing more money than a year ago. CoreWeave recorded a $1.93 billion loss in the twelve months to June 2026, nearly double the $1.02 billion it lost over the prior twelve months.

Each share now holds a smaller stake in the business. CoreWeave carried about 13% more diluted shares in the twelve months to June 2026 than a year earlier, and on September 17 it set up a program to sell additional shares into the market.

CoreWeave’s Sales Are Still More Than Doubling

Revenue reached $2.58 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up 112.5% from a year earlier, and sales had already more than doubled in each of the two prior quarters.

You now pay much less for those sales. The stock trades at 3.5 times its twelve-month revenue, down from 6.3 times on September 30 for the same twelve months. That multiple accounts only for the value of the shares and leaves out the company’s debt.

Signed contracts also expanded. Management put the company’s revenue backlog, which reflects contracted sales not yet recorded as revenue, at $104.2 billion at the end of June. That is up 246% from a year earlier. This backlog is the figure to watch when CoreWeave reports its third quarter of 2026, expected in November 2026.
