What Does Comfort Systems Stock’s Winning Streak Really Prove?
Investors often view a five-year winning streak against the S&P 500 as evidence of an exceptional business. Comfort Systems USA (FIX), a provider of commercial, industrial and institutional heating, ventilation, air conditioning and electrical contracting services, maintains exactly that record. Of about 480 large U.S. stocks, how many do you think did the same?

How Rare Is Comfort Systems’ Winning Streak?
Comfort Systems stock outperformed the index in every one of the five years to October 15, 2026, based on price changes measured before dividends.
| Period | The stock | S&P 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Oct 7, 2021 to Oct 7, 2022 | +29.0% | -17.3% |
| Oct 7, 2022 to Oct 10, 2023 | +67.7% | +19.7% |
| Oct 10, 2023 to Oct 10, 2024 | +141.1% | +32.6% |
| Oct 10, 2024 to Oct 14, 2025 | +104.3% | +15.0% |
| Oct 14, 2025 to Oct 15, 2026 | +78.1% | +16.6% |
Price changes over periods of 252 trading sessions each, dividends excluded.
Only 9 of the 485 S&P 500 members measured achieved the same result. Outperforming the broader market in a single year is unusual, with only 36.9% of them beating the index in the latest year. Beating it in any one year is the less common result, and doing it five years running remains rare.

Could A Streak Like This Be Luck?
Statistical probability dictates that a handful of companies will build long streaks regardless of underlying quality. About four in ten of these stocks beat the index in a typical year. If market performance relied entirely on random chance, drawing four in ten names from a hat of 485 stocks each year would still produce winners.
Repeating that random draw five years in a row leaves about six names remaining every single time. Under this scenario, six companies would assemble a five-year winning streak with no skill involved at all.
Market data shows 9 companies currently hold such a streak. That represents about one and a half times as many as luck alone would give. Some of the nine may be there on merit and some by luck, and the share price alone offers no way to tell the difference.
Did Comfort Systems’ Profit Grow Through The Streak?
The company operates two businesses. Its Mechanical segment generated about three quarters of revenue in fiscal 2025, and an Electrical segment brought in the rest.
Its net income rose in all five years of the streak. Net income rose about 865% over that period, while the stock rose about 1,797%.
That net income includes one-time items, incorporating unusual gains on a big change order that management singled out in 2026. Rising profit nevertheless underpinned the stock’s run every year. This financial expansion offers no definitive ruling on skill, yet it confirms that the growth extended through the company’s own results and not just its share price.
What To Watch Instead Of The Streak
Electrical work is currently expanding at the fastest pace. Management noted on the July 24, 2026 call that Electrical segment revenue grew 81% in the second quarter, compared against 40% for the Mechanical segment. Same-store backlog, which tracks work already booked but not yet done, was 69% higher than a year earlier. Management warned that this growth faces really heavy year-earlier comparisons, especially in the fourth quarter.
A winning streak simply records historical share price movements. The fundamental figure to monitor is Comfort Systems’ profit growth, which investors can evaluate in the report expected on or around October 22, 2026.
