Shares of Carvana (CVNA) gained 5.4% on Monday, November 2, 2026, as the S&P 500 fell 0.5%. The company released no announcements, earnings reports or filings that day, but all five car retailers on its peer list also rose. What news that Monday bears on a car retailer like Carvana?

Carvana’s Costs Are Tied To Fuel And Rates
News reports said that crude prices slid on Monday as investors braced for a big week, and the retreat in oil cooled inflation fears. One report named the week’s big events: Apple’s results, the midterm elections and the jobs data due Friday. Fuel prices and interest rates directly affect Carvana, which buys, reconditions and delivers cars. Treasury yields also eased that Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported. On its October 28 call, management said big moves in gas prices and interest rates cost the company about $200 per unit in the third quarter. Higher fuel and logistics costs also lifted operations expense per retail unit sold, management said, though lower overhead more than made up for it.
Auto Retailers Rose Too, But Less Than Carvana
Carvana rose alongside its peer group, but posted larger gains. CarMax, AutoNation, Lithia Motors, Penske Automotive and Group 1 Automotive, the companies on its Trefis peer list, all gained that session. AutoNation rose 3.5% and Group 1 Automotive gained 3.4%, recording the largest gains among them. XLY, the fund that tracks its consumer discretionary sector, rose 2.4% while the S&P 500 fell.
Where Carvana Stock Stands After A Volatile Year
Gains like Monday’s are common for Carvana. Over the prior 365 days, the stock rose this much or more in 20 sessions. Most recently, shares jumped 15.7% on October 29, the day after the company released its third-quarter results.
Over the 12 months to November 2, Carvana returned 17.4%, compared with 11.5% for the S&P 500. Its $72.00 close is still well below its 52-week closing high of $95.69, set on January 22. The stock took an uneven path. Over the six months to November 2, Carvana lost 5.9%. In the month from October 2, it gained 12.9%, while the S&P 500 fell 2.3%.
Carvana is priced at 1.9 times its sales over the past twelve months, compared with 3.3 times for the S&P 500. When Carvana reports its fourth-quarter 2026 results, operations expense per retail unit sold is the measure to watch. That metric rose $109 in the third quarter on higher fuel and logistics costs.
