Synopsys (SNPS) stock trades at 82.9 times its last twelve months of earnings, compared with 22.8 for the S&P 500. Buyers paying that much appear to be betting on AI. During its August 26, 2026 call, management said design activity is highest among AI and high-performance compute customers. Synopsys also sells to chip designers outside AI, where the pace is quieter. So what has been happening at Synopsys’s customers outside AI?

Synopsys Customers Outside AI Slowed Their New Chip Designs

They slowed the pace of new chip projects. During the fiscal Q3 2026 call, management was asked whether AI was simply offsetting weakness elsewhere, and answered that it had observed a slowdown in design starts, the launch of new chip projects, among customers outside AI. Over the last two quarters, management said, those starts stabilized and are no longer declining.

Design starts for AI chips, by contrast, have kept accelerating, according to management. That appears to leave Synopsys relying more on a single group of customers: the AI and high-performance compute companies developing increasingly specialized chips. That reliance is the risk. Synopsys sells the IP and design solutions behind new chips, and outside AI, the pace of new chip projects slowed before it settled.

Synopsys’s Revenue Sources Next To Its Price

Synopsys reports two segments that together accounted for all of its $7.05 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue. The larger one, Design Automation, brought in $5.3 billion that year, up 25.6% from the year before. Design IP brought in $1.75 billion, down 8.1%.

In the latest quarter, Synopsys’s total revenue grew far faster than its EDA revenue. Total revenue rose about 42% from a year earlier in fiscal Q3 2026, a figure that included about $711 million from Ansys, which Synopsys had acquired a year before. Within the Design Automation segment, EDA revenue from its chip-design software and hardware grew 8.5%. Design IP returned to growth, posting revenue of $474 million, up about 11%.

Synopsys shareholders are paying a price that leaves little room for a setback in design starts. At the end of June 2026, Synopsys’s P/E was higher than it was at 33 of the 40 quarter ends since fiscal Q4 2016. The stock closed on November 2, 2026, at 12.8% below its highest close of the past year, which it reached on May 26, 2026.

Should Synopsys Holders Worry About The Slowdown Outside AI?

Yes, but it is a slow risk rather than a sudden one. Management says design starts outside AI have stopped declining. It also expects double-digit organic growth in EDA revenue for fiscal Q4 2026 and for the full year, though that remains a forecast, not a result. At its September 30, 2026 investor day, Synopsys targeted fiscal 2027 revenue of up to $11.2 billion and announced multi-year deals with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services.

The stock price is what makes the risk worth knowing: it appears to assume that AI customers keep more than making up for the rest. With the P/E higher than at most quarter ends in a decade, shareholders have less room if design work outside AI weakens again.

Synopsys is expected to report its fiscal Q4 2026 results in December 2026, and EDA revenue growth against a year earlier is the measure to watch.
