The recurring-revenue share management once put front and center has slipped while hyperscaler orders became the story.

Cisco Systems (CSCO) used to hand shareholders one simple marker of its transformation: the share of revenue coming from subscriptions, which management put in front of investors on earlier calls. That share is still reported and accounts for nearly half of total revenue. It is also falling, and no longer the number management builds its case on. The stock is up 78.9% over the past twelve months, and what a holder owns now grows on a hardware cycle more than on recurring revenue.

The Subscription Share Cisco Once Led With Is Now Below Half

In late fiscal 2025, management highlighted subscription revenue at 56% of total revenue. For fiscal Q4 2026, that figure sat at 48%, reported as one line inside a list of recurring metrics while management’s own account of the year ran on orders and AI infrastructure. Nothing in that percentage drop says subscription dollars shrank; total ARR and subscription metrics kept growing. The share fell because hardware product revenue grew far faster.

Product Revenue Grew While The Services Line Stood Still

Product revenue rose 24% year over year in fiscal Q4 2026 while services revenue was flat at $3.8 billion. The engine is hyperscaler AI infrastructure, which supplied about 6% of fiscal 2026’s $63.3 billion of revenue, against less than 2% in fiscal 2025. Cisco took $9.3 billion of AI infrastructure orders in fiscal 2026, about 60% of it Silicon One-based systems and 40% optics, including from its Acacia business.

Hardware Mix And Memory Costs Are Showing Up In Gross Margin

Non-GAAP gross margin was 66.3% in fiscal Q4 2026, down 210 basis points year over year though up 30 basis points quarter over quarter. Product gross margin fell 270 basis points on higher hardware mix and memory costs, partly offset by price increases, and management has flagged a further slight gross margin headwind through fiscal 2027. The price increases Cisco has taken are single-digit, aimed at hardware rather than software, and they added about 5 points of top-line growth in fiscal Q4 2026.

Q4 non-GAAP operating margin moved the other way, expanding from 34.3% to 35.9% year over year because hyperscaler business is won with minimal incremental expense. For full-year fiscal 2027, guidance implies an operating margin near 35%, keeping profitability near company record levels. Profitability that improves through mix is one of the qualities the Trefis High Quality Portfolio looks for.

Reassuring On Execution, But A Different Cycle To Own

None of this is a warning. It is the arithmetic of a working pivot, and management has guided fiscal 2027 revenue growth to 15%, an acceleration on the 12% just delivered. What changed is the shape of the risk: a holder who bought a business steadied by recurring revenue now owns one whose fastest growth leans on a few hyperscalers’ capital budgets. Whether that keeps working shows up first in the guide, which a guidance-driven momentum screen keeps score on.

The figure to watch is total ARR, up 3% year over year in fiscal Q4 2026 with its product piece up 5%, against remaining performance obligations up 7%; if the recurring base keeps growing at that pace while product revenue compounds, the cushion the subscription story provided keeps thinning.

Unanswered Questions Cost The Biggest Holders The Most

When management leaves questions open, the uncertainty weighs heaviest on whoever owns the most of the stock. A position that has grown large enough to matter is worth sizing deliberately rather than by accident. What a position that size would do to your net worth is exactly what the Trefis Wealth team computes, with the same rules-based systematic discipline that runs our High Quality Portfolio.
