Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) stock lost 29.2% in the year to October 20, 2026, while the S&P 500 returned 17.1%. Investors buying today pay 26.7 times earnings, compared to an average of 45.2 at the stock’s last 12 fiscal quarter ends. Shareholders who sat through the decline and buyers who waited for it both want to know what the business can still add. So what would a share bought at today’s price be worth three years from now?

Chipotle Stock Could Gain About 10% In Three Years

Under these assumptions, a Chipotle share would be worth about $32.65 three years after the October 20 close, 10.1% above today’s price. The scenario assumes revenue will grow at 0.8 times Chipotle’s latest yearly growth rate. It also sets the year-three net margin between today’s level and its recent average, keeping it closer to today’s figure. The table below compares today’s numbers against the scenario.

Today In three years (scenario)
Revenue $12.4 billion $14.7 billion
Net margin 11.4% 11.9%
Earnings $1.42 billion $1.75 billion
P/E 26.7 23.9
Share price $29.65 $32.65

Higher revenue drives the gain, adding about 19% as Chipotle sells more food across its restaurants. A slightly wider net margin adds about 4%. A lower P/E takes back about 11%.

Where Would Chipotle’s Extra Sales Come From?

Chipotle adds sales in two ways: opening new restaurants and selling more food at the locations it already runs. In fiscal Q2 2026, sales grew 9.3% from a year earlier. Comparable restaurant sales, which track locations open long enough to compare, rose 2.2%.

Restaurant openings are holding steady. Management still expects to open about 350 restaurants in fiscal 2026, the same pace it gave in April. Management said on the fiscal Q2 2026 call that new restaurants still earn cash-on-cash returns of around 60% in their second year.

Sales at existing restaurants represent the slower part of the business. Management, which gave no revenue forecast for fiscal 2026, expects comparable sales growth in the low single digits for the year and around 1% in fiscal Q3. Management also said sales trends softened by about 200 basis points in late July, around the cyclospora issue affecting the industry.

How Would Chipotle’s Upside Change Under Other Assumptions?

The table below shows the upside when changing one assumption at a time while keeping the others as they appear in the scenario.

If instead Upside
Nothing changes (the scenario) 10.1%
Revenue growth of 3.8% a year instead of 5.8% 4.0%
Net margin of 12.9% in year three instead of 11.9% 19.5%
P/E of 26.7 in year three instead of 23.9 23.1%
5 years at the same assumptions instead of 3 23.4%

The scenario models a year-three P/E lower than today’s figure. Trefis set the assumption this way because revenue grows more slowly in the model than at Chipotle’s recent pace, and this lower P/E acts as a drag on the upside. Chipotle also starts from a thinner margin than usual: its net margin over the latest twelve months sits below the reading recorded at each of the 12 earlier fiscal quarter ends, from Q2 FY2023 to Q1 FY2026. Revenue growth has slowed as well, falling from 14.9% in the twelve months to fiscal Q2 2024 to 8.6% a year later.

Under these assumptions, three years of owning the stock would return nothing if revenue growth slowed to 2.5% a year, against 5.8% in the scenario and 7.3% in the twelve months to fiscal Q2 2026. The investment would also return nothing if the net margin in year three were 10.8%, compared to 11.4% today. The same is true of a year-three P/E of 21.7, against 23.9 in the scenario and 26.7 today.

Chipotle’s next report, expected on or around October 28, 2026, will detail comparable restaurant sales for fiscal Q3 2026, the measure to watch.
