Arista Networks (ANET) stock fell 18.2% from its October 9 high of $216.74 to $177.24 at its October 26, 2026 close, and buyers are tempted to act on such a rapid decline. Bargain hunters are betting that Arista’s AI and enterprise customers will maintain the momentum behind management’s third raise of its 2026 outlook. Skeptics point to what the shares still cost. Did those who bought Arista’s earlier sharp falls come out ahead?

Buyers Mostly Came Out Ahead After Arista’s Earlier Falls

A year later, most of them did. Since June 2014, Arista stock has had 14 falls of a fifth or more within six weeks of trading. Thirteen of those drops have a full year behind them, and the shares were higher a year later after 10 of those 13. Buyers saw a median result of a 25.0% gain. The latest fall, in November 2025, remains too recent to judge.

Collecting that gain required patience. Buyers on the day of each fall sat through a median further drop of 17.0% during the following year. The stock took a median 321 days, or about ten and a half months, to reach its best price of that year.

Buyers of the May 2019 fall fared worst among the earlier drops. Within a year, the shares closed as much as 35.6% below their price on the day of that fall. Twelve months later, they were still down 9.0%.

Arista’s Sales Are Growing Faster Than A Year Ago

Arista’s customers are keeping up the pace so far. Revenue grew 37.7% from a year earlier in fiscal Q2 2026, up from 30.4% growth in fiscal Q2 2025. Management said the growth came from AI and enterprise customers, noting that its Etherlink switches for AI have now won more than 100 customers in total, up from the first four or five it described in 2024. On the August 4 call, the company raised its 2026 outlook to 40% revenue growth.

This growth is also profitable. Arista kept 43.1% of its revenue as operating profit over the past twelve months, compared with 18.5% for the S&P 500. The company holds $13.3 billion in cash and short-term investments, carrying no debt.

What Are Buyers Paying For Arista’s Growth?

Investors are paying far more than they would for the broader market. Arista shares trade at 55.2 times earnings over the past twelve months, compared with 22.9 for the S&P 500.

An earnings multiple does not show how much of Arista’s sales translate into cash, and a smaller share did so in fiscal Q2 2026. Cash from operations accounted for 35.7% of revenue that quarter, down from 62.5% in fiscal Q1. Management warned on the August 4 call that swings in inventory, as Arista balances the timing and supply of components, could shift when operating cash arrives in some quarters.

Is Arista’s fall a bargain, then? The company’s historical record after sharp drops and its sales so far point to a bargain, while its high valuation and weaker second-quarter cash serve as warnings. Buying the shares now means believing this fall will end like most earlier ones did, and that AI customers will keep buying at the pace behind management’s 2026 outlook. When the company reports fiscal Q3 2026 results in November 2026, Arista’s revenue growth against that outlook is the number to watch.
