MercadoLibre (MELI) shares fell 7.8% on Monday, October 26, 2026, while the S&P 500 gained 0.7%. The company released no announcements, earnings reports, or filings. The drop came the day after Brazil’s president won a surprise fourth term in Sunday’s runoff election, with news reports placing MercadoLibre among the U.S.-listed Brazilian stocks that fell. So why would a vote in Brazil pull down MercadoLibre’s shares?

What Ties MercadoLibre To Brazil’s Election?

A news report said the U.S.-listed Brazilian companies most exposed to government policy and borrowing costs took the hardest hit from the surprise result. Shares of Brazilian companies fell broadly that Monday, and news reports named MercadoLibre among them.

MercadoLibre maintains operations in Brazil. Management said on the August 5 call that items per buyer on its Brazilian online marketplace grew 19% from a year earlier in Q2 2026. The company is also a lender, and its credit portfolio reached $16.4 billion in Q2, up 75% from a year earlier.

Did Comparable Stocks Fall As Much?

They did not. Four of the five companies on MercadoLibre’s peer list fell during the session, but PayPal’s 3.6% drop was the largest among them. Amazon was the only one that rose, gaining 0.4%.

The sector moved the other way. XLY, the fund that tracks MercadoLibre’s consumer discretionary sector, rose 1.0% that session. MercadoLibre dropped more than twice as much as PayPal, falling far more than its peers while its sector advanced. The stock tracked Brazilian shares instead, though to a lesser degree: a news report said a Brazil ETF fell 20% that Monday.

Where MercadoLibre Stock Stands Now

Declines of this size are uncommon for MercadoLibre. The stock had dropped this much in three other sessions over the prior 365 days, most recently falling 12.7% on May 8, 2026.

Monday’s drop deepened a one-year loss. The shares have shed 22.3% over the past year, trailing a 15.3% gain for the S&P 500. They closed at $1,668.72, sitting far below their 52-week closing high of $2,360.76 from October 30, 2025. With a 52-week closing low of $1,546.81 on May 15, 2026, the shares now rest much closer to their low than to their high. Over the three months to October 26, they lost 10.4%, while the S&P 500 gained 3.6%.

Following the decline, MercadoLibre trades at 2.4 times its sales over the past twelve months, coming in below the S&P 500’s 3.2 times. MercadoLibre is expected to report its third-quarter 2026 results in November 2026, and the growth of its credit portfolio is the measure to watch.
